Top Five Tips for Spring Photos! I recently photographed a client who wanted dreamy photos, surrounded by flowers. I chose my local library for the location and used an 85 mm 1.4 lens for the session 1. Find a location that provides a good backdrop. It doesn’t have to be a grand location, just enough to fiti. Frame of your photos. These were at the Columbia Cty Library. 2 find good light. Location is nothing without light. The light on the subject is what’s important 3. Styling: style the subject in styling that fits the vision and mood. This was a dress from my studio wardrobe. 4. Time of Day. Go when the light is best. Light is everything. Nowadays the light gets good around 5:30pm where I am. 5. Blur out distracting objects with a high focal length lens and focus on your subjects. Hope this helps! We often shoot day care centers after hours or on the weekends so the students aren't in the building. This was shot on a Saturday and someone from the center met me on her day off to let me in the building. She not only gave me access, she helped style all the rooms we were shooting. What a gift! A glimpse into what my house looks like in the days leading up to a big shoot… props piling up on every surface. Justification for the huge pile of baskets that sits in our hallway, which prove invaluable for carting props. Foraged foliage, vintage finds, new hand-made pieces, loaned items from my maker friends…. all carefully curated to bring character, a story and a beautiful aesthetic to a shoot. A stylist /art director’s day rate isn’t just the hours spent behind the lens, it’s the creation of a vision, the hours spent sourcing and mood boarding, the packing and unpacking of huge numbers of props, liaising with florists and makers, time spent foraging and hunting in dusty corners of vintage-filled warehouses or tiny shops. Whether it’s a creative service or a maker producing an artisanal product, what you see is usually only the tip of the iceberg. Yet another reason to shop small and use indie creatives, all of whom paddle hard below the surface whilst these squares sometimes only reflect the gliding swan above.
