A glimpse into what my house looks like in the days leading up to a big shoot… props piling up on every surface. Justification for the huge pile of baskets that sits in our hallway, which prove invaluable for carting props.
Foraged foliage, vintage finds, new hand-made pieces, loaned items from my maker friends…. all carefully curated to bring character, a story and a beautiful aesthetic to a shoot.
A stylist /art director’s day rate isn’t just the hours spent behind the lens, it’s the creation of a vision, the hours spent sourcing and mood boarding, the packing and unpacking of huge numbers of props, liaising with florists and makers, time spent foraging and hunting in dusty corners of vintage-filled warehouses or tiny shops.
Whether it’s a creative service or a maker producing an artisanal product, what you see is usually only the tip of the iceberg. Yet another reason to shop small and use indie creatives, all of whom paddle hard below the surface whilst these squares sometimes only reflect the gliding swan above. So, here’s to sharing the #bts, the juggle and the paddle, the full story and the mess. 💛 #lifeofastylist #kinshipcreativedc #artdirection #shootstylist #stylist #behindthescenes #abeautifulmess
