It brings me joy and pride when I find my reports useful and part of researchers' studies. I am pleased that my #journalism reports from my time in Iran have been beneficial for researchers, providing a slice of historical studies. Working in a news agency often sacrifices depth for speed. However, during my journalism career in Iran, my concern was to examine issues in depth and avoid a superficial glance at various matters. Therefore, I tried to trace the roots of each subject, which often lay in culture, society, politics, history, or even a lack of sufficient information in the community. I worked on a report about the issues in the #cinema industry, taking a #historical look at this industry in #Iran and the city of #Tabriz. This report was cited in the book "A Companion to Motion Pictures and Public Value" by the authors of the book. I am glad that despite distancing myself from the #journalism environment and writing reports, after years, my reports are revived in various research works, becoming impactful and remembered. My report with the title "Beyond History to These Days of Cinema in Tabriz| Cinema 'Soli': The Sun That Made the Miracle of Photos and Films Public" is in Persian and you can find it in the below link: mehrnews.com/xr8Lw If you are interested in cinema and #media, you can also find the link to the "A Companion to Motion Pictures and Public Value" book. https://lnkd.in/dXNfnzeS

The Academy Awards nominations for Best Documentary can honestly be hit or miss, but this year’s nominees are exceptional films 🎥 The awards campaign is known to be a gruelling and competitive process, and for many filmmaking teams can feel like a distraction from - or even at odds with - the mission or message of their films. But these documentaries really deserve the visibility this nomination will bring them. Here’s a couple of thoughts on each 🍿 SUGARCANE – The extraordinary @natgeodocs following an investigation into abuse and missing children at an Indian residential school sparks a reckoning on the nearby Sugarcane Reserve. I have watched the impact campaign in awe - with the US Government making their first ever formal apology for the residential boarding school system, ‘blot on history’. NO OTHER LAND – Arguably the most timely film of the year - the story of a Palestinian activist Basel Adra documenting his community’s displacement and forming an unexpected friendship with an Israeli journalist. Despite its unbelievable success - it still has not found distribution in the US, which many suggest is because of the subject matter. BLACK BOX DIARIES – A @dogwoof release this raw and intimate portrait by journalist Shiori Itō who investigates her own sexual assault, seeking to prosecute the high-profile offender. Her quest becomes a landmark case, exposing Japan’s outdated judicial and societal systems. Such a brave and bold film which first premiered at Sundance last year. PORCELAIN WAR – This film is about the difficulty and necessity of producing art in times of conflict - in this case, the Ukraine war. It won the Grand Jury Prize in the US doc competition at @sundanceorg last year - unsurprisingly as it’s a beautiful meditation on art as a rebellious act and an act of creation in the face of destruction. SOUNDTRACK TO A COUP D’ETAT – Such a fascinating and beautifully crafted doc using jazz as a lens to explore the assassination of DRC prime minister Patrice Lumumba, the CIA and decolonisation in the DRC in the 1950’s - this one is a rollercoaster and so much more than your average music doc 🎵 You have to check them out 🙏🏻

Archival Producers Alliance has a new PDF of "Working with Archival Producers" -- highlighting roles, responsibilities and expectations. Highly recommend that anyone working with archival and clearance as well as any producers hiring staff read through it. It's a great summary. Well done APA! #documentary #archival #archives #film #television #nonfiction #APA #factsmatter #clearance #producers #production --- “Working With Archival Producers” is a guide intended for non-fiction practitioners. It presents the advantages of collaborating with a skilled archival team, as well as bringing on an archival producer early in the production process. It is designed to help documentary teams work with archival producers in ways that will maximize their benefit to the production. We encourage filmmakers using archival materials in their documentaries to download, use, and share this resource freely. "Working With Archival Producers" was written by Eugen Bräunig and Debra McClutchy with input from the APA Membership. It was conceived, written and edited beginning between June and December 2024, and was published on the APA’s website on January 8, 2025. The document was edited by Prudence Arndt, Jennifer Petrucelli, Stephanie Jenkins & Rachel Antell. Design by Meaghan Kelley. https://lnkd.in/gFvDM8Qe

The editing technique known as “montage” a rapid sequence of shots to condense time or action was popularized by Soviet filmmakers in the 1920s, especially Sergei Eisenstein. The word itself is French for "assembly" or "editing." Eisenstein believed that juxtaposing contrasting images would evoke new meanings, and it's still widely used in films today (think of every training montage ever!). I'm re-sharing an article I wrote about the convergence of Film Studies and the Digital Humanities, and how my own research on the caméra-stylo in the social media age is a reflection of and response to this disciplinary shift.
