Virtual assistants have become integral to our daily lives, aiming to simplify everyday tasks. However, many of these have been assigned a female "persona", sparking an important conversation about #gender stereotypes and #technology. To examine this issue, we speak to visual artist Nadja Verena Marcin, the creator of #SOPHYGRAY - The feminist chatbot and recipient of an honourable mention at the 2023 #EUPrize for #citizenscience. https://lnkd.in/efUshdW3

Lawyers Hub is a Law-Tech organisation working on Digital policy and Justice innovation; including the Africa Digital Policy Institute, Africa Startup Law Accelerator, Africa Law Tech Festival & Legal Innovation week
Angela Minayo pointed out the importance of intentional #gender mainstreaming in #AI discourse, not just in policymaking but also in broader debates. This includes incorporating gender aspects into human rights impact assessments before deploying AI in the judiciary. A robust framework for #humanrights impact assessment, a multi-stakeholder approach, and viewing #technology's gender problem as an opportunity for transformation are essential. By addressing gender blind spots and disproportionate effects on #women and gender minorities, the #judiciary can better handle cases and expand human rights within the context of technology. Today marks the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a pivotal moment in 1969 that ignited the LGBTQIA+ rights movement. While we celebrate the significant progress made, we acknowledge that discrimination and social stigma still affect many lives. In order to continue the fight for equality and understanding, AI technology also gives its contribution with the introduction of the new project "AI Comes Out of the Closet." This online study, created by MIT graduates Daniel Pillis and Pat Pataranutaporn, uses AI-generated dialogue and virtual characters to simulate real-world scenarios that LGBTQIA+ individuals face, especially the challenges of coming out in the workplace. By merging technological innovation with a dedication to inclusivity, this initiative aims to foster empathy, understanding, and advocacy skills, contributing to the ongoing struggle for equality both legally and socially. “There's something about queer culture that celebrates the artificial through kitsch, camp, and performance," says D. Pillis. 🌈✨ Let's embrace and celebrate this unique culture today and every day! 🌈✨ Discover more about their project on: 👉 https://lnkd.in/dWiyBWEw #PrideMonth #technews #AI #LGBTQIA

Yesterday, CDT and other US civil society organizations endorsed a bipartisan bill DEFIANCE Act which aims to update violence against women legislation to protect women and LGBTQ+ communities from non consensual intimate images (NCII) generated by AI. AI-generated NCII is increasingly weaponized to harm women and LGBTQ+ communities disproportionately, causing severe emotional, financial, and reputation damage. The DEFIANCE Act focuses on unique harms posed by AI-generated NCII while minimally impacting valuable speech. We need similar policy across Canada. #Legislation #ProtectPrivacy #CDT #DefianceAct #VAWA

Trans Scholar & Activist | PhD in Gender Studies on AI, Algorithmic Violence & Trans Liveability @ University of Cambridge | Cambridge Trust International Scholar | MPhil in Education (KPP) Grad @ Cambridge
The summer is nearly past us, but AI harm and forms of algorithmic violence directed towards LGBTQ+ lives do not stop when the sun sets! Unprecented algorithmic infusion is happening, artificial intelligence shows up in every conversation and still more chunks of our lives become mediated by technological devices, but through this development, queer and trans lives, bodies and identities are at stake as they are subjected to disproportionate means of targeting, control, surveillance and erasure from AI technologies embedded in vicious cisnormative and colonial legacies. As such, we might ask, what happens with queerness in the machine? How is queerness read through the algorithmic lens and what are the implications? During this Copenhagen Pride Week on the 14th of August, I am lucky to participate in the wonderful and highly-needed 'Queers in the Machine Symposium' at IDA, where we focus on how AI implicates, restricts and affects the liveability and everyday lives of LGBTQ+ people. Together with amazing Mikkeline Sofie Skjerning Thomsen and Maia Kahlke Lorentzen I will join a panel where we assert a critical queer eye on AI as it directs and determines the content, expression and lives on social media platforms through algorithmic content moderation, cisnormative defaults, shadowbanning and ominous feedback loops that especially impact and hurt LGBTQ+ people. Additionally, you can listen to Steph Maj Swanson talk about queer horrors of Generative AI along with algorithmic artist Ada Ada Ada who will teach you how to spot, glitch and play with biases in Generative AI. Neither of these talks is something you would miss if you are interested in feminist tech and algorithmic justice! I hope to see as many of you there as possible, so we will be collectively equipped to refuse, disrupt and envision radically better and sustainable algorithmic futures based on principles of intersectionality, justice and restoration! https://lnkd.in/dpuucSRq #queer #translives #algorithms #aiethics #artificialintelligence #lgbtq #feministtech
