• Excited to announce and share our new publication, a Research Paper titled "𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗸-𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘃𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗽-𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆", published in Nanoscale, Royal Society of Chemistry. 📚 The work was the result of a synergistic collaboration with my esteemed colleagues Luca Buccini, Anacleto Proietti, Chiara Mancini, Francesco Mura, Stefano Tacconi, Luciana Dini, Marco Rossi and Daniele Passeri, thanks to whom it was possible to share an enriching journey. 🔬This research introduces a groundbreaking approach using Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS) to delve into the intricacies of bovine milk-derived extracellular vesicles (mEVs), nanostructures with considerable potential in drug delivery and therapeutic applications. By combining the sensitivity of Raman spectroscopy with the high spatial resolution of an atomic force microscope (AFM), we have unlocked the ability to investigate individual mEVs at the nanoscale, shedding light on their chemical compositions and structural nuances. Our findings not only advance the understanding of mEVs, but also highlight the immense potential of TERS in unlocking the secrets of extracellular vesicles. Wonderful to see the research published which was initiated during my post-doc in the Melville Laboratory under the guidance and support of Profs. Oren Scherman and Steven Lee. Congratulations and special thanks to colleagues and close friends Alan McLean and Renata Lang Sala for their perseverance and hard work in completing this chapter. In this work we report on the detection of fluorescent host-guest complexes (2:2) at ultra low concentrations (<1 nM) enabled by TIRF (Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence) microscopy. By measuring the single molecule photon budget and applying a thresholding method, we were able to distinguish between free fluorophores and those bound in a host-guest complex confirming the stoichiometry at an individual complex level. In contrast to typical surface-based detection methods, there was no need for covalent attachment of either host or guest to the underlying surface, simplifying the chemistry and allowing for closer comparison to bulk measurements. We also show that single-molecule microscopy (SMM) can be used to probe the same complexes within materials, choosing an agarose hydrogel as a model. Ortho-Nitroaniline, a model system for the insensitive high explosive TATB, is much more stable than similar nitroaromatics, making it less susceptible to accidental ignition. What about this molecule makes it so much more stable? In this work, the authors investigate, using femtosecond time-resolved mass spectroscopy alongside theoretical calculations to explain. Our new book chapter entitled "The Ultrasonic-Assisted #Synthesis of Locust Gum/Peg-Silver #Nanoparticles and Its #Mathematical #Modeling of Rheological Parameters" has just been published in "Foundation and Growth of Macromolecular Science" by Apple Academic Press. Herein we report the investigation and modeling of ultrasonic-dependent rheological properties of LG/PEG-Ag NPs.

Curious how the ouzo effect manifests at nanoscale? Maria Vratsanos, PhD, Nathan Gianneschi, and their colleagues at Northwestern University and Penn State University, published recent work using their Hummingbird Scientific in-situ liquid flow TEM sample holder (https://lnkd.in/guhTaK9) to characterize spontaneous, liquid-liquid emulsion dynamics of homogeneously-sized nanoscale structures formed by the ouzo effect. For the first time, droplet dynamics such as formation, growth, and movement have been observed at the nanoscale using liquid phase transmission electron microscopy (LPTEM). Growth constants and number of droplets were found to be directly proportional to the trans-anethole (taste molecule in ouzo) concentration, and ripening kinetics deviated from established models of Ostwald ripening. The team demonstrated the utility of LPTEM for examination of soft matter, liquid-liquid phase separation systems, emulsifications, and their evolutions under dynamic conditions.
