I am confused regarding exact definition of a Chartered Accountant. Who meets the criteria to be designated a chartered accountant? A) only Rankholder can be a Chartered Accountant B) Ceared CA in first attempt can be a Charted Accountant C) Cleared both group together can be a Chartered Accountant D) Everyone who cleared CA final exam can be a Chartered Accountant If your answer is (D) then why everyone asked your attempt. Why ICAI asked your attempt while filling the form for campus placement. Why most of firms preferred both group candidates in first attempt for articleship. It’s true that attempts are crucial because if you're not shortlisted by any company, you won’t have the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge. I believe there should be no distinction based on the number of attempts, as candidates who didn't pass the CA exam on their first try have already experienced a loss of time. Once a candidate passes the CA exam, they have acquired the same level of knowledge as someone who passed on their first attempt, placing them on equal footing. 🎓 CA degree can only be achieved based on MERIT. Let me tell you why: 1️⃣ Every Candidate is Equal: There are no quotas here. SC, ST, OBC or General, every student has an equal chance of becoming a CA. 2️⃣ Only One Institute: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is the sole authority for this degree. So, you can't get a similar-looking degree from any tier-2/3 college or institute. 3️⃣ No Cheating: Very famously, the ICAI President’s daughter also failed the CA Final exam. Is doing CA all worth it? Lot of commerce students clearing their higher secondary( 10+2) are stuck between whether doing CA is worth it or will it waste their 5 years? When it comes to acing the CPA Exams, the question arises: does practical work experience make a difference? Having passed my CPA Exams, I've witnessed varied outcomes among candidates. In the Audit and Attestation exam, practical experience as an Auditor can be beneficial, allowing you to relate to many topics. However, success isn't guaranteed solely based on work experience. I've seen Audit seniors from esteemed organizations struggle and require multiple attempts to pass. On the flip side, many freshers have excelled in the exams effortlessly. The key lies in conceptual clarity and a deep understanding of the core concepts. You need to write ICAI exams to become a CA but CAT to get a job At least 15000 CA students will become CAs in July 2024. Companies face a very basic problem while recruiting - whom to interview and whom not to interview. You can only interview maximum 150 candidates if you have 30 vacancies (most companies have far fewer vacancies). Earlier this was done by using “attempts”. If you have upto 2 or 3 attempts you can interview with us, else you cannot. Though this is still widely used, over the last 1 year there has been a major change. Most of the good and high paying roles are shortlisting based on written tests. These written tests usually contain CAT type aptitude based questions where you need strong Maths, English and Logical Reasoning skills. Sometimes they include technical topics like IND AS and Corporate Finance. But what about those who aren't good at these types of questions? We're unfortunately moving towards a system where every exam and selection process is becoming more and more like CAT where just one type of “intelligence” is being prioritised over all other types. And there's absolutely no evidence that these people perform better in their jobs. “Why did I clear CA if my job shortlisting is going to be based on my performance on a CAT-like exam? I should have studied for CAT itself” - several CAs from the November 2023 attempt asked me. I don't have a good answer for this, except that now the value of “fewer attempts” has reduced. Irrespective of attempts or marks, everyone can sit in these “psychometric” tests. Based on my experience over the last 2-3 years, the number of companies using these has at least doubled. If you can't score well in these, it doesn't matter even if you're a rankholder. You will not be shortlisted by certain companies. To prepare for these you need - practice! And that practice should spread across a period of 2-3 months - so you can't start after CA final results. Is having that "SUCCESSFUL" on your mark sheet enough? Really? The ICAI is introducing 3 attempts a year & is aiming for 30 lakh Chartereds by the year 2047. So, is an increase in passing percentage a part of that? Why do we always see an exceptionally high passing percentage in the first attempt of a new scheme?  (For eg, In 2006 about 66% to 67% of students cleared CPT) 20446 students qualified as a CA in this attempt.  Do we have sufficient employment for all these qualified chartereds? Do we have enough Articleship opportunities for students who cleared CA intermediate? All these questions came to my mind after knowing that the overall pass percentage of the CA final is 19.88% and for CA intermediate is 18.42%. The fact is that the job market isn't robust enough to sustain such high numbers. In some roles, CAs are being replaced by MBAs in finance at cheaper CTCs. When students pass with such good scores, they expect to join the Big Four.  But do these firms have enough vacancies? These questions are concerning. Share your opinions in the comments. ICAI has announced that CA Inter and CA Foundation exams will now be held thrice a year. 📣 *Great News for CA Students!* It's a big and a right move and will surely result in various benefits for CA Students. - More student intake and reduced drop outs: CA Students intake was falling but with exams now in every 3-4 months instead of every 6 months, we can expect more student to enrol. Now they know that it will be quicker so can be taken up. Also students who don’t clear their first attempt may be more likely to try again rather than dropping out or moving to other qualifications (which is very common) - Early Articleship and hence an Early job: Articleship can start sooner now; when students can retake exams more quickly there will be reduction in time at large to clear the exams hence they can start their articleship early and so does the job. - Enhanced Motivation: Hoping the students to clear early now there will be a huge bump up in the motivation level of student fraternity - which was very much needed. However... is this change enough? May be No! It's just one step. Several changes are required to keep our CA course practical, industry relevant, result-oriented. Generally I never ask any student about the result in any academic or professional examination. Especially if it's CA exam (having a fame for sharing stories of struggles of failed students) Fear is that the person hearing this might feel low or ashamed if the result is not as per his or her expectations. Those who clear at first attempt can never understand the agony and pain of a failed student.. Even people from a non CA background also chase them about their results for no reason. When the others ask one such one and the recipient of the question could answer negative only under a sorry state, their sad reaction hits me hard. But when out of them , some one comes out and say "it's cleared", I feel the happiness of success from within. However , we can still celebrate as he is already one step up in reaching his goal. Wish he remains in his focus.
