At the Tech Council of Australia's National Summit, we had the opportunity to share an update on our Virtual Work Experience program, which aims to address the tech workforce shortage in Australia. In less than a year, over 15,000 youth have participated in the online initiative. In the last month, we've upgraded the experiences to increase engagement and gamification, and rolled them out to 1250+ schools across Australia via the Career Tools platform. We're pleased to share that included in the updated library are two new experiences, sponsored by Commonwealth Bank - UX/UI Designer and Platform Engineer. Thank you to our tech partners Tech Council of Australia, Commonwealth Bank, Microsoft and nbn® Australia for supporting the program and helping us build a talent pipeline that's equipped to meet the needs of Australia’s evolving tech landscape.

There’s a fine line between letting people “𝑓𝑖𝑔𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑢𝑡” and offering a helping hand. With winter just around the corner, my kids remind me of this daily. Despite freezing temperatures, they’d still walk out the door coatless because, according to them, they’re “fine.” As a parent, I’ve learned to pick my battles—some lessons are best taught through personal experience. But other lessons? They’re far too important to leave to chance. The same principle applies to teaching and training. As educators, you do so much more than prepare students for tests or graduation. You build the foundation for lifelong success. 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬—not just for the next year but for five, ten, or even twenty years down the road. The next generation is more diverse in skills and interests than ever before, and that’s exciting. But it also means there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to success. Johnny might grow up to become Dr. John. Jessica could thrive as Jess the Architect. No matter their path, every learner deserves the opportunity to build a sustainable future. That’s where 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 becomes 𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙. It helps students see the connections between education and real-world opportunities, giving them a clear path to follow. At Transfr, we’re helping people dream big by immersing them in virtual reality (#VR) career exploration. By stepping into a VR headset, they can experience careers firsthand and discover which paths align with their skills and interests. For example, a student might say, “I’m not interested in healthcare” because they imagine dealing with blood or bodily fluids. But in VR, they can safely explore other healthcare roles—like IT, administration, or lab work—that never cross their mind otherwise. In 2024, education is evolving. Transfr is taking career exploration to 𝑛𝑒𝑤 ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑠, making it 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 than ever before. So, here’s the real question: Are your students or learners ready to explore what’s possible? Let’s talk about how Transfr can help your school or program set students up for long-term success. After all, just like I make sure my kids leave the house with their coats, let’s ensure every learner is fully prepared for the road ahead.

It's a powerful exercise that allows you to reflect on your ambitions, set actionable goals, and visualize your path to success. I loved reading this example of how to tackle structural barriers for young mothers in tech! Albeit focussed on the US, this pilot programme is designed to help young mothers break into the IT workforce by providing IT training, leadership development, and essential support services like childcare and housing assistance. This initiative is a great step towards dismantling the barriers that often prevent mothers from pursuing careers in tech. As someone who pivoted into tech herself, I understand the challenges of entering this field. Programmes like these not only equip women with the necessary skills but also emphasise the importance of providing practical experience and meaningful certifications that hold real value in the job market, rather than just virtual signaling. This is not just a charity project; it brings real value. Studies have shown that a more diverse workforce in tech leads to greater innovation, better decision-making, and improved financial performance. By creating sustainable pathways into tech, we can ensure that more women, especially mothers, have the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the industry in meaningful ways. This is how we build a truly inclusive and dynamic tech workforce. https://lnkd.in/eF8KCEXb

Women in tech - students, and those in the early stages of your careers - if you aren’t already a member of Rewriting the Code, please apply! RTC has been an essential ally in my journey into the tech workforce. This past Wednesday, I had the opportunity to join their career summit and connect with other women and non-binary individuals at various stages in their careers. My absolute favorite part of the event was the talks by Takiesha Waites-Thierry and Nikki Pope who shared their non-traditional routes to - a very successful - career in the industry. As a 27-year-old attending classes with students who are often much younger, I sometimes question if I’m too late, and I know I’m not alone in this feeling. Diversity is what makes the world so exciting, and representation is the most powerful tool to encourage people who feel out of place to pursue their rightful dreams. Women, queer & trans folks, people of color, people with disabilities, and all marginalized folks out there—you do belong. You are not too late. Find a community and surround yourself with love and examples of success. Aside from RTC, here are a few other organizations to check out: Latinas in Tech Out in Tech Women Who Code Women In Technology (WIT) Blind Institute of Technology Open Sourcing Mental Illness (OSMI) Blacks In Technology AISES (Advancing Indigenous People in STEM) Lesbians Who Tech & Allies TransTech Social Enterprises ...AND SO MANY MORE!! Take advantage of their programs and feel the love of the communities. Give back when you can <3

The most important era of 20th century!! ✅ From 2010 to 2022, technological advancements have had both positive and negative effects on young people. On the positive side, technology has greatly improved access to education and information, with platforms like Khan Academy and Coursera making learning more accessible. Social media and digital communication tools have allowed for global connectivity, fostering cultural exchange and supporting social movements. Technology has also helped families stay connected, even over long distances, and provided spaces for creativity and self-expression. ❌ However, these advancements have also brought challenges. Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have led to issues such as cyberbullying, social comparison, and unrealistic beauty standards, contributing to anxiety, depression, and body image problems. The widespread use of smartphones has resulted in addiction, sleep deprivation, and shorter attention spans, negatively affecting mental health and academic performance. The constant influx of information online has exposed young people to stress-inducing content, while also making it harder for them to distinguish between real and fake news. 🌐 Moreover, the overuse of technology has weakened face-to-face interactions within families, and constant distractions have harmed educational focus and critical thinking skills. Online anonymity has fueled cyberbullying and harassment, and gaming addiction has led to social isolation. Algorithm-driven content has created echo chambers, limiting exposure to diverse viewpoints and making it harder for young people to judge what is good and bad.⚠️ 👹 These issues have made youth more susceptible to manipulation for political and religious purposes, with bad actors exploiting their lack of critical thinking to push extreme ideologies or misinformation. While technology has brought significant benefits, it has also introduced challenges that must be managed to ensure the well-being and development of young people. Balancing these positive and negative aspects is crucial for fostering a healthy relationship with technology.ℹ️☢️⁉️ #technology #revolution #genz #curseoftechnology #blessingoftechnology #2010to2022 #YouthAndTech #DigitalWellbeing #TechAndMentalHealth #SmartTechUse #EdTech #DigitalBalance #TechAwareness #PositiveTech #TechResponsibility #DigitalGeneration
