We met with Samuel F., Senior Architectural Designer, to mark 10 years at 'Team AD'. The figures speak volumes: Sam's project ‘Burleigh’, a celebrated neo-Edwardian house, has been our most popular on socials for two consecutive years (bottom left). Upcoming posts on Sam's work and further chats will be shared on our Instagram and Facebook soon. Q. Can you share with us how your journey began? A. I began with a CAD course, following apprenticeships in construction. Initially hired as a CAD technician, I worked on developer projects before transitioning to private client work. Under the mentorship of our team leader, Steve Bennett, I learned about job running and pursued further qualifications, with valuable support from our MD, Alex Horder. Q. What historic styles most influence your work? A. My work is influenced by ancient Greece and Rome, as well as the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and the Arts and Crafts movement, which underscore exceptional craftsmanship. The superior quality of timber and other materials from these periods and their enduring appeal resonate with me. Q. Are there any architects or designers who have particularly inspired your approach? A. Certainly, my team leader Steve has been pivotal in my development. Working with Warren Joseph, our Founder, has been incredibly enriching; his breadth of knowledge is vast. From my colleague Tom Mulroy, I've gained insights into integrating contemporary floor plans with traditional styles, while Jennifer Smith, another colleague, has taught me the value of creativity over strict adherence to rules. Q. How would you describe your design philosophy? A. Client-centric. Often, clients have a clear vision, which we refine and advise on. I recall a project in Denmark where the client outlined her vision in sketches, and I transformed these into plans. Q. In what ways has the industry changed over the last ten years? A. The layout and design of larger homes have remained fairly consistent, though there's a trend towards laundry upstairs and 'bootility' entrances on the ground floor. Sustainability is increasingly emphasised, such as a memorable client who requested a 15,000 sq ft Passivhaus. Q. Looking to the future, what are your aspirations or goals? A. Designing mansions is a privilege, allowing me to create some of the finest homes. I intend to interpret clients' briefs in such a way that the 'dream homes' I design endure for a lifetime. Q. What advice would you give to new designers? A. Don't feel bound to a conventional path. Aim for a broad base of knowledge before specialising, becoming a more versatile designer. The role encompasses three key areas: space planning, aesthetic design, and the ability to consolidate these within client budgets. I feel incredibly fortunate in my work and the people I collaborate with – truly some of the best in the industry, working on outstanding homes globally. #architecture #architects #work #culture #team #luxuryproperty

Co-founder & CEO at Critical. | Startmate Accelerator S22 Alumni | TEDx Speaker | I help designers create beautiful spaces using 100% recycled plastic panels called Cleanstone.
As a former architect I know that project constraints often breed creativity. However constraints from the materials we choose for our builds often restrict design freedom. I remember designing a classroom block in my twenties and feeling so frustrated because we had to use 'tried and true' materials that often resulted uninspiring and boxy schools. I still remember that feeling of gritting my teeth as I resentfully copied and pasted templated ArchiCAD models of rectangular classroom blocks and boring joinery. Every young person start their design careers full of inspiration, and the art is not to loose that sense of creativity and imagination as we get older. Which was one of the reasons why I started Critical. We wanted to make materials that is better for designers and better for the planet by designers. And alongside Luka from Acryform we've been having a bit of fun pushing the limit of Cleanstone. Here is how you can blow mould the Forest Cleanstone into an endless number of 3D shapes: 1. Clamp the sheet onto a steel plate with a hole for an air inlet nozzle. 2. Together with the steel plate, move the assembly into a large commercial oven to soften the panel. 3. Remove the assembly while Cleanstone is hot and soft and screw the air value connected to a compressor through the bottom of the metal plate. 4. Blow air into the assembly and watch Cleanstone inflate. You can blow mould Cleanstone in a variety of was like: 🛀 Into a female mould so the large blow moulded part could form into a vanity for example. 🌏 Blow mould in different orientations and use gravity as a moulding method 🔧 Play around using found objects like mesh to restrict the material during blow moulding to discover unique shapes. I run a green building materials company called Critical. and we help designers and brands create beautiful spaces using 100% recycled plastic panels we call Cleanstone. If you're working on a fit out and are looking for sustainable materials to realise your unique vision, hit me up via a DM or through our website: Criticaldesign.nz

With Results Day behind us, I have been getting a lot of questions about choosing between architecture and interior design. Both fields are incredible, but they offer different paths and rewards. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide: Architecture ▫️Scope: Design entire structures, from skyscrapers to parks. ▫️Skills: Requires a mix of creativity, math, physics, and engineering. ▫️Education: Long path with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, internships, and licensure. ▫️Opportunities: Work on diverse projects like residential, commercial, and public buildings. Specialize in areas like sustainable design. ▫️Impact: Shape cities and communities on a grand scale. Interior Design ▪️Scope: Focus on creating functional, beautiful interior spaces. ▪️Skills: Emphasizes creativity, space planning, and client interaction. ▪️Education: Shorter educational path with a focused degree. ▪️Opportunities: Work on residential, commercial, and institutional spaces with a growing demand for eco-friendly designs. ▪️Impact: Enhance how people experience their environments on a personal level. Comparing the Two 🔹Creativity vs. Technicality: Architecture blends creativity with technical skills; interior design is more focused on artistic vision. 🔹Macro vs. Micro: Architects design the larger structure; interior designers focus on details. 🔹Education: Architecture has a longer, more rigorous path; interior design is quicker to enter. Which is Better? If you’re drawn to large-scale projects and a structured career, architecture might be your path. If you prefer detailed design and client interaction, interior design could be a great fit. Choose the field that aligns with your passion and career goals! 🌟🏛️🪑 #architecture #interiordesign

From a young age, I was immersed in the world of design through my family’s architecture business, and that early exposure sparked a passion that would shape my career. My love for interior architecture led me to pursue a D.Arch (Diploma in Architecture), where I deepened my understanding of how thoughtful design can transform spaces and lives. With 4 years of hands-on experience as a 3D Visualizer, I’ve become proficient in AutoCAD, 3ds Max, Lumion, SketchUp, and V-Ray—tools that have allowed me to bring countless design visions to life through high-quality renderings and detailed 3D models. Each project has been an opportunity to push creative boundaries, learn, and grow. Now, my vision is bigger than ever. I am determined to take my architectural business to a global stage, applying my skills and passion to create innovative spaces that inspire. I believe that great design isn't just about aesthetics—it's about functionality, emotion, and creating environments where people thrive. #creative #officehours #mentorship #worklife #growth

#architecturedesign #architecturalvisualization #architecturalrendering #archicad #archtect3D Designing a commercial building in 3D involves various steps and considerations. Here's a general guide to help you get started: -Define Project Goals: Identify the purpose of the commercial building (office space, retail, hospitality, etc.). Determine the target audience and their needs. Set budget constraints and timelines. -Site Analysis: Evaluate the location, topography, climate, and surrounding buildings. Consider accessibility, parking, and zoning regulations. -Concept Development: Brainstorm and sketch initial ideas for the building's form and layout. Consider functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. -Space Planning: Determine the interior layout, including rooms, corridors, and common areas. Consider the flow of people and the functionality of each space. -Architectural Style: Choose an architectural style that aligns with the project goals and the surrounding environment. -3D Modeling: Use software like AutoCAD, SketchUp, or Revit to create a detailed 3D model of the building. Include realistic textures, lighting, and shadows for a more accurate representation. Develop detailed construction documents, including plans, elevations, sections, and specifications. ----------------------- Assess the building's performance and gather feedback after it is occupied. Remember, this is a simplified overview, and each project may have unique requirements. Engaging with a professional architect and other experts in the construction industry is crucial for a successful commercial building project.
