Our story in Afghanistan is far behind that of the global average. We have not been able to cross the most primitive barriers, and therefore the level of our discussions is outdated. For example, for today’s humans the importance of women’s literacy is no longer a topic of discussion. They do not have to wage a struggle for it. But for us, it is not like that. To deal with the Taliban’s brutal gender segregation in the country is the most important question of our time. In the Taliban system, gender segregation is the most important part of both religion and politics. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e2RiGW6D

As we observe #internationalwomensday2024, let's remember that Afghanistan under the Taliban is arguably the worst place in the world for women and girls. The Taliban is creating a system of gender apartheid that discriminates against women and girls in all aspects of the social, political, and economic life of the country. In their new article for Just Security, brilliant Farkhondeh Akbari and Kobra Moradi offer an important perspective on the complex and intersectional nature of gender apartheid through the perspective and experience of Hazara women. As the authors argue, the intersectional nature of the gender apartheid regime must be recognised and included in any discussion of human rights and international policies on Afghanistan. End Gender Apartheid: No to Doha 3! “UN experts* today said the situation of women and girls’ rights in Afghanistan has reverted to that of the pre-2002 era when the Taliban last controlled the country, effectively erasing progress on women’s rights in the intervening 20 years.” https://lnkd.in/eMsJRNGT The upcoming Doha 3 meeting on June 30th excludes women's rights and the physical presence of Afghan women and CSOs, a condition demanded by the Taliban for their participation. We must prevent history from repeating itself. If the UN doesn't revise its agenda to include women, we must say NO to Doha 3. _ سنشارك النسخة العربية لهذا المنشور قريبًا جدًا_ Two decades post-UN Resolution 1325, global efforts to safeguard women in conflicts, notably in occupied Palestine, reveal a stark disconnect between international commitments and tangible outcomes. This critical study highlights the necessity for nuanced, effective strategies that transcend mere rhetoric, advocating for a profound engagement with the intricacies of gender equality and peace processes in Palestine. The attached factsheet summarises key highlights and insights from the report on 'Resolution 1325 Through the Eyes of Palestinian Women', produced by our partners, the Culture and Free Thought Association in Palestine. The SAWT project has generated valuable insights through seven country-specific research reports and a comprehensive regional overview, looking into the intricacies of gender dynamics in conflict, particularly women’s political participation in peace and political initiatives in countries of intervention. Studies have shed light on the intersectionality between conflict and gender and how discriminatory policies and practices disproportionately affect women’s situation. Ultimately, they have demonstrated that women’s political participation and sustainable representation are crucial missing pieces in the puzzle of peace-making and state-building processes. Women’s exclusion from the formal peace processes is an indication of the broad systematic gender inequality in the political, social, and economic spheres. The continued absence of women in peace processes require a re-assessment of the strategies used to promote women’s participation with a view of formulating new approaches to enhance women’s access, ascension, and leadership to formal political and peace building processes. Addressing these inequalities calls for context appropriate policies and data to inform the effectiveness and impact of the various strategic measure put in place. 🕊️The upcoming 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 will mobilize ongoing support and solidarity for improving the situation of women in the region and initiating a shift in approaches to peace, by incorporating women’s leadership and a gender perspective in the Luanda peace process. 🌐To learn more about the Forum, visit https://ow.ly/2eyH50TE3iC
