Exciting news in career and technical education! I'm thrilled to share this Star Tribune article highlighting the innovative use of Virtual Reality (VR) to bring hands-on learning experiences to students, particularly in rural areas. This is a game-changer for reducing transportation barriers and building student confidence before entering the workforce. Huge shoutout to my colleague, Kim Mueller, from South Central Service Cooperative, who is a driving force behind this incredible program as part of the Minnesota Career-ConneCTEd Learning Leadership Committee. We're so grateful for the support of Emily Saed and the MN STEM Ecosystem for connecting organizations across Minnesota and getting these VR headsets into the hands of local service cooperatives, educators, and ultimately, students. My own cooperative, Southeast Service Cooperative, is actively exploring recommended curriculum to provide students with these valuable virtual learning opportunities. 🌟 Calling all Educators & CTE Specialists using VR! 🌟 As a College and Career Readiness Coordinator with nearly two decades of experience, I always look for innovative ways to enhance our students' learning experiences—especially regarding Career and Technical Education (CTE). One area I’m particularly interested in exploring is the use of Virtual Reality (VR) to prepare students for the workforce. Specifically, I'm curious how schools utilize Transfr VR products to enhance their CTE offerings and create immersive, hands-on experiences for students in traditional / non-technical high schools. I am searching for a way to provide my students with the closest thing I can to what I am able to provide my traditional college-bound students to my trades-empassioned students. (Limitations for authentic experiences for this population due to Department of Labor Guidelines for hazardous work environments for minors.) If you've implemented VR in your CTE programs, I’d love to hear from you on the following: Funding: How did you secure financing for VR headsets and subscriptions? Did you utilize grants, district funds, or other creative solutions? Credit Bearing: Is VR training integrated into your credit-bearing courses, or is it robust enough to stand alone as a mini-seminar class? If so, how is that structure set up? Gaining District Support: What key selling points helped you gain buy-in from administrators and district leadership? Pitfalls & Lessons Learned: What challenges or unexpected obstacles did you face during implementation, and how did you overcome them? Positive outcomes for the students.  I’m excited to hear your thoughts and experiences and to learn how we can leverage these technologies to give our students the skills they need to succeed in the workforce. This story below reminds me why I’m on this path. 🤩🙌 VR technology has proven to be an effective tool that can be used to offer intervention and support to students with ASD and other learning disabilities. It provides autistic students with 🔷a safe 🔷and sensory-friendly environment, 🔷where instruction can be designed to suit the needs of the student. 🔷Reduces anxiety, offering a way for these students to escape to a more relaxed and calmer environment. It’s amazing to see immersive learning experiences which are engaging and inspiring students in a unique and powerful way. New pathways to support our students 🥰 I’m so grateful to be partnered with Saltysharks Uprising, a platform which is doing just that! Check out Robert Keanalley’s ( CEO Salty Sharks) experience at the World Science festival event. “We had an amazing interaction at the World Science Festival on the School student day in the afternoon when home school students were coming through the event. It was late in the day, and a young boy came up to try the VR immersive experience inside our virtual aquariums. Once he put the headset on, he started to describe the experience, what he was seeing and experiencing. It was at that point, that his Mother started to cry and knelt down beside him gently. When I asked what had just happened, she explained that he was a special needs student who was non-verbal They had been at the science event all day, and this was the first time, late in the day, that he had uttered a word. It was clear that being immersed in the virtual aquarium had taken him to a comfortable place and he was speaking like any other normal child! She began filming it and stated that she wanted to show this to his speech therapist. A truly moving experience! The coordinator of the Home school network in the area was present at the time and this particular experience was shared with the heads of the Queensland Museum at their next board meeting, so moved were they by this experience with the young boy.” #education #neurodiverse #asd #teachers #technology #inclusion #empowerment

Turning Stumbles into Success: How Embracing Humor in Teaching Virtual Reality Built Stronger Connections🎮🤝 In the summer of 2024, I had the opportunity to intern at the Youngstown Business Incubator as part of the youth program, working under as a Youth Coordinator. I was tasked with engaging middle and high school students in the world of virtual reality (VR). Initially, I struggled to teach the technology effectively, as I was still learning it myself. The kids were quick to laugh at my attempts, but instead of feeling discouraged, I decided to join in on the fun. 🤔💡 They helped me navigate the VR sets while I shared the importance of saving to buy their own high-tech equipment someday. Embracing humor during my stumbles and unprofessional moments turned out to be a valuable strategy. This approach fostered a sense of connection and humility that ultimately enhanced both my teaching and the students' learning experience. By acknowledging my own limitations with humor, I was able to create a more relaxed, collaborative environment that facilitated deeper engagement. This story even illustrates how I just made a connection with you!
