Last Tuesday, 10 Year 8 students from Hoe Valley School (Woking) visited Yes Futures' long-standing partner, Havas, in their incredible King's Cross office hub. The students learned about the world of Media and PR and had an extensive tour around the offices, which provided them with an insight into a modern-day office, the different agencies and departments and the opportunities available to employees. They also used their creativity, teamwork and communication skills to design a campaign and pitch it to a panel of expert judges. Students left feeling inspired and understanding more about the industry and their routes into future careers.

This article hits on SUCH an important point. FAR too many people have never worked an entry-level service industry job and skipped straight to college and a “white collar” career. I learned SO much working at Starbucks (back when we had to manually pull 30 second shots) and my wife learned so much working third shift at Waffle House. People who skip this stage fail to learn those valueable lessons and it often shows in how they approach their careers later on. Yesterday, at Disney World, we saw SO many cast members who were in college working in the park. They defied ALL stereotypes about Gen Z and were hard working and had AMAZING personalities. They are precisely who we need in the work force!! Companies need to find ways to identify recent grads who have actual real work experience in service industry jobs and give them preference in hiring instead of focusing on internships and elite colleges.

Today a coworker (Thanks Anna Glotzer!) introduced me to the article #BlueCollarBrilliance by #MikeRose, which argues that intelligence isn’t only shaped by formal education but is also developed through the hands-on skills and problem-solving abilities required in blue-collar work. As educational trends shift to emphasize diverse career pathways, this message has never been more relevant. 📚🔧 We’re seeing a growing appreciation for career and technical education (#CTE), #apprenticeships, and real-world skill development as viable paths to success as the #BabyBoomers being to age out of those trades. Programs like #CampInvention and the National Inventors Hall of Fame’s educational offerings are at the forefront of this movement, helping students develop essential skills—creativity, resilience, and problem-solving—that apply in any field. By engaging students with hands-on STEM challenges, we’re inspiring the next generation of thinkers and doers, whether their future involves a college degree, a trade, or an innovative new career. 🚀 I know I have always tried to rethink how I define and support my own success, so let's do that for students of all backgrounds. Highly recommend reading Blue-Collar Brilliance for anyone interested in the value of all types of work and intelligence! https://lnkd.in/e4EdTVaT #Education #BlueCollarBrilliance #CareerReadiness #STEM #InventionEducation #SkillsForSuccess #HandsOnLearning

The first time I travelled to NYC, very early in my broadcasting career, I stood in the middle of Times Square looking up at the giant billboards, dreaming of a moment like today. It didn't come easy, and it didn't come fast. In fact, I was in New York City at that time to interview for an internship at NBC at the young age of 20. That was one of the best opportunities that didn't happen. Why? Because 17 years later, I have worked tirelessly to create and share my message about workplace wellness, building resilient relationships, and changing people's lives through the Healthy Habits App. To spread this vision, and see it now lighting up Times Square is proof that dedication to teamwork, collaboration, and following your dreams truly pays off — and it's still just the beginning! Let this be a reminder that you can reach the goals you've always dreamed of by accelerating your clarity and focus, filtering fear, and surrounding yourself with people who want to see you shine! Speaking of a supportive team, a heartfelt thank you goes to Matthew Emerzian and Aaron Knipp Cicospace for capturing this dream come true! Do you believe in the power of setting bold goals? What big goal are you passionately pursuing? Drop a comment and let’s chat 💪✨ #GoalSetting #Accountability #Resilience

What is the point of having summer days at the company? I just participated in another unforgettable event organized by Bigbank, and I feel genuinely happy and grateful for having such a great employer and awesome colleagues. Creating such a positive feeling is obviously a good reason to have summer days. But there can be more! Things to consider when organizing the event: ↪ Team building and cooperation If your main goal is to improve cooperation between employees and focus on team building, it’s best to have the summer days without families. Activities should be team-focused, and it might be beneficial to rearrange teams between activities to encourage collaboration among different groups. ↪ Socializing and fun If your goal is to enable employees to get to know each other better and just have fun, you should consider a variety of activities and allow families to participate. ↪ Maximizing attendance To maximize attendance, schedule the summer days during the workweek. If this is not possible, consider allowing families to attend and providing attractive activities for everyone. Would you add anything else?

Great insight on the trade-offs between large corporations and smaller teams. It's true that fewer layers can lead to more empowerment and ownership, which often drives greater productivity. In my experience, the most rewarding environments are those where every team member has a direct impact
When asked whether I want the medium or large pizza, I always go big. When buying a new TV the same bias plays out (could a tv be too big?). I’ve been conditioned to believe that big is always better. As my career progressed, I found that the closer my roles took me towards the corporate headquarters the greater the burdens of bureaucracy and egos. I remember fondly the peace that I felt during my Disney Cruise Line days, when I was on board the ship deep in the Caribbean. When I joined the Disneyland team the moat around my castle consisted of the traffic congestion from Burbank to Anaheim. That wasn’t quite the defense that I had hoped for because the people senior to me all had drivers. To be fair, it was a small contingent seeking a photo op that would spoil my mood; others were strong supporters of what we were doing. Such is the reality in the world of large corporations. There is no denying that what I learned at Disney was invaluable and prepared me for life outside the kingdom, but there came a time to move on. When I joined Cedar Fair (now Six Flags….) I knew my world was going to be different in a lot of ways. Cedar Fair’s valuation was a fraction of Disney’s and lacked the wealth of resources that Disney could bring to bear. At Disney, the brand was front-and-center in every conversation. Cedar Fair didn’t have a consumer brand, it relied on the consumer loyalty to the individual parks. There is a much longer list of what my new employer didn’t have, but fortunately that included the absence of the bureaucratic burdens I mentioned above. As the CEO of Cedar Fair, I found a freedom that just isn’t available in large corporations. The team I inherited was as talented as those I worked with in Orlando and Anaheim. They didn’t have experience dealing with the scale of the larger parks, but the breadth of their individual responsibilities was greater – it had to be, there were a lot fewer of them. Every one of the senior team reported directly to me, there were no double-dotted-lines or confused loyalties. Cedar Fair will never have the level of resources that exist at a Disney or Universal. Where it shines over those giants is the productivity of each member of the team. Fewer people, means fewer layers, means fewer meetings, means more empowerment, means more accountability and arguably more fun. A small group of us made the decisions, tasked the operators to bring those decisions to life and lived with the consequences. No one competed for the credit when things went well, we were all in it together. I still believe bigger is always better when it comes to pizzas and tv’s, but at least for one chapter of my career, less was more. P.S. Whether you are in a big company, or a smaller one always ask yourself are you still learning? Are you gaining skills and making yourself more valuable? Adding tools to your toolbox is the key to moving forward.
