(These opinions are my own) I recently had the opportunity to participate in two impactful education conferences: Yes.Every.Kid’s Stronger Together Denver Cohort and ExcelinEd’s ESA Administrators Network in Minneapolis. These experiences caused me to reflect on school accountability within our education system, particularly in relation to market-based approaches. I find myself aligned with ExcelinEd’s CEO, @Patricia Levesque who borrowed a line from her friend 50CAN’s president Derrell Bradford by stating, “you regulate a monopoly different than a market.” Levesque points out that accountability assessments are crucial for traditional public schools due to their monopoly status, whereas market-driven education relies on parental choice as a robust accountability measure. (Regulating Public, Private Schools: Parental Choice Is The Key (excelined.org) I particularly value ExcelinEd’s A-F accountability framework for its clarity in assessing school performance, which is essential for both schools and families. Building a School Research Culture through Partnerships: A Forum for Educators Tuesday 18 June 2024 at Trinity Grammar School How can schools, universities and other education-focused organisations engage in partnerships to promote a research culture? How can educators from across sectors collaborate successfully to advance research that informs and enhances practice in schools? This one-day Forum is a follow-up to last year’s Navigating School University-Research Partnerships Forum. The program is designed to inspire and provoke professional discussion and expand education research networks. Dr Sarah Loch (Pymble Ladies’ College) and Professor Nicole Mockler (University of Sydney) will present keynote addresses, while spotlights from a range of presenters on current research partnerships between schools, universities and other organisations will spark ideas for new initiatives. Roundtable discussion sessions will involve all participants in actively sharing research practice in their contexts. Educators from all sectors (pre-school, primary and secondary schools, universities, other education organisations) are invited to participate. This is the third year that Harvard has held this event and this one was themed “Maintaining the Momentum” and was more focused on homeschooling. Videos of all the sessions can be viewed here: https://lnkd.in/euHBR494 I couldn’t attend all the sessions, so I’m just writing about the one’s I attended. I thank the Harvard Program on Education Policy and Governance for bringing attention to these issues and making its sessions publicly available. The conference opened with a panel discussion, “What’s the growth potential of emerging models?” There was a lot of talk about the economics of these models—tuition, staffing, and class size—but the bottom line is the growth potential is strong, especially from the growing number of parents and educators seeking alternatives to conventional schooling, with the recent strong rise in the number of homeschoolers leading the list of “education consumers” these schools and businesses seek. Are micro schools sustainable? was a session I was particularly interested in because I’ve been cautiously watching their development for a long time. Many years ago I remember Larry Kaseman writing in the Wisconsin Parent’s Association newsletter that homeschoolers need to be wary of micro schools as they are a potential way to make homeschoolers more accepting of regulation and school instruction in their homes. This is proving to be true in some states: the panel in this session was clear that to receive funding some micro schools must enroll the homeschoolers in their programs as regular students ...
