If you had a rough start to your day, here's a tip: Chop the day into 4 quarters. Just like any good sports team, you gotta know it's not how you start, but how you finish. Just because I stunk in the 1st quarter, doesn't mean I can't make up for it later in the day. This is how I think about it: I'm awake ~16 hours per day. That's 4 separate 4-hour quarters. If my 1st quarter stunk, that's OK. Still plenty of time left. Sometimes it just takes one good quarter of the day to make it a major win. So if you had a rough start... There's 3 more quarters in the day for you to come back.

Are your standards holding you back? How a runner did the impossible, and changed everyone's beliefs. In 1954 Roger Bannister did something that no other human had ever done before - he ran a mile under 4 min. Runners had be trying to break this seemingly impossible barrier since 1886, but no one could. Guess what happened after Bannister broke the 4 min mile? Runners every where started doing the same. In one race FOUR RUNNERS did it! The people we surround ourselves has a huge impact on what we believe is possible. They have an immense impact of how we view the world. If you have people around you that lifts you spirit, challenges your views, argues your beliefs and show new ways of doing things - chances are you'll change! You might even break your own "4-min mile" attempt. Whatever that might be. But remember, you must raise your standards.

This picture just hit me. Back in the good old days of field day in the 80s, thriving in competition meant more than just winning the three-legged race without tripping over your shoelaces. It was a battlefield of epic proportions, where glory was measured by how many times you could hop through the potato sack race without resembling a flailing penguin. And let's not forget the egg-and-spoon race, where balancing a fragile egg on a spoon was like trying to keep your cool during a surprise math test. Ah, the memories of victory and scraped knees – it was a time when the grass stains on your shorts were badges of honor, and the only thing sweeter than victory was the orange slice waiting for you at the finish line. In the workplace, channeling that same competitive spirit from the 80s field day can be surprisingly beneficial. Just like strategizing to dominate the tug-of-war, employees learn to push themselves beyond their limits, fostering innovation and creativity. The camaraderie built from cheering on teammates during the sack race translates to a supportive work environment, where colleagues rally together to overcome challenges. And those lessons in resilience from enduring a humiliating defeat in the three-legged race? They teach invaluable skills in bouncing back from setbacks, crucial for navigating the ever-changing landscape of the professional world. So, just like the glory days of field day, embracing healthy competition in the workplace can lead to victories that are just as sweet, minus the grass stains and egg yolk mishaps. OK, maybe we weren’t still doing egg races at field day in the 80s, but it just fit too perfectly into my metaphor.

End of Dry January!! Book Friday off because you'll have a major hangover or the start of a new you?? 🤔 Performance and goal setting is often talked about not just in the training room, but often in our office. We have an ultra competitive hockey player and two of us looking to achieve running milestones; so between us, we get really curious about what works and what doesn't when it comes to achieving goals. One thing we've noticed is about the moments when you go "off the wagon" or face crossroad crunch points. Mine is around 10:30pm: "do I open the fridge or not?" and if (or when) I do; will that be the excuse I use to give up or to not try harder the next day? Now that Dry January has ended; have you reached your "why" for doing it in the first place? And if not, will you build on what you've achieved in January or be relieved that it is over and crack open a cold one tonight?? 🍻 #dryjanuary #goalsetting #performancemanagement
