In my journey, I’ve found some simple yet powerful strategies to help me self-regulate: 🛑 Pause before responding: Take a quick breather, just 20 seconds, to transform your reaction from impulsive to thoughtful. 🚶♂️ Take a step back: Sometimes, all you need is a change in scenery. Whether it’s a stroll, a chat with a friend, or just a sip of water, stepping back offers a fresh perspective. 🧠 Recognize your emotions: Put pen to paper and jot down what you’re feeling. Understanding your emotions is the first step to mastering them. By accepting and processing our emotions, we unlock the power of thoughtful responses. 🌟 Hard skills are important in our daily work, but attitude matters even more. There are people you simply would be happy to work with and cross professional paths with again and again. In my personal experience, one of the powerful differentiators to help be someone people would love to work with is active listening and empathy. But how can we put these skills to use and be more active listeners in the workplace? 🎧💼 🕰️Be present. Being present in the moment is essential to active listening. 🗣️💬 Ask open-ended questions. These questions encourage colleagues to share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns openly, promoting a culture of collaboration and inclusivity. 🔄👂 Reflect on what you've heard. Reflective listening involves repeating or summarizing what you heard to show that you have understood and are paying attention. 🙂👥 Practice active engagement. Active engagement involves showing that you are actively listening by using nonverbal cues such as nodding, smiling, and appropriate facial expressions. Curious to learn more? All of these have been proven in research over the years, most notably by Google’s Aristotle Project and the research of Amy Edmondson, a Harvard Business School professor. 📚Looks like psychological safety is critical in the workspace and life.
