Amplifying Leadership through Research: OB Professor & AMJ Editor | Weekly Digest on Leadership Trends
"When we talk about ways to deal with stress at work we often try to fix the people but it is companies that need to be fixed." This remark just nailed it. It voiced that bothersome thought that keeps popping up whenever I'm heading for yoga or practicing mindfulness, the unsettling feeling that I'm somehow the issue. While 50% of U.S. organizations offer mindfulness training to combat stress, this article in the Academy of Management Review makes the point that this is merely a surface solution for a systemic issue. Organizations often stress employees with long hours, poor work-life balance, inefficiencies, and a productivity-driven culture, then expect mindfulness to be the cure. This approach puts the burden on employees to 'fix' their stress, while the root causes in the organization remain unaddressed. The article offers ideas for how to achieve this transformation. https://lnkd.in/e7WMBVmi

Have you ever felt your energy lag in the middle of the day or right before a big meeting? An Embodied Leader senses this energetic shift in their body and knows exactly what to do - get in a little movement! Often, the workplace isn't the best place for big movements, so this exercise is perfect to do at your desk without being too distracting. A seated spinal twist invigorates the body and awakens the mind. Give this a try instead of reaching for a sugar boost at mid-day and see how just a little movement can boost your mood and your energy. Seated Spinal Twist - Begin in a seated position with your feet flat on the floor, palms resting on your thighs. Inhale as both arms come up overhead. Exhale and turn to the right, lowering the right hand to the back of the chair and left palm to the right thigh. Look over your right shoulder like you are backing up a car. Breathe in through the nose, exhale through the mouth 5 times. Gently return back to center. Repeat the entire sequence turning to the left. I see that you are interested in changing decision. Do you mean how to make a big or life-changing decision? If so, I can provide you with some information and tips from reliable sources. According to Psych Central1, some of the tips for making a big decision are: Ask yourself the right questions, such as what are the pros and cons of each option, how will this decision impact your well-being and others, and what if you fail or succeed. Make time for quiet reflection and practice mindfulness to stay grounded in the present moment and connect with your inner thoughts and feelings. List the pros and cons of each option and weigh them objectively. Accept failure as a possibility and a learning opportunity, and don’t let fear of failure paralyze you from taking action. Set a deadline for making the decision and stick to it, as delaying the decision can increase your stress and anxiety. Ask for support from trusted people who can offer you honest feedback and encouragement, but don’t rely on them to make the decision for you. Trust your gut and listen to your intuition, as it can often guide you to the best choice for you. I hope this helps you with your decision-making process. Do you take breaks? Not from from work, but from food? Why should you? 🤷🏼♀️ After fasting systematically over a period of 6 months, documenting the process via the method of auto-ethnography, I’ve discovered 4 crucial benefits of fasting: 1. increase focus on work and contribution - instead of food and drink 🤎 2. increase capacity to smell 👃🏼 3. being more attentive in relationships rather than focusing on what I(or the ego) want 👂🏼👂🏼👀focus on what “do YOU want ?” - this is also essential in sales 😁 4. feeling lighter and connected to Spirit ✨ In relation to work, I’ve also experienced that have done more of the work that I’ve tended to avoid like archiving 😂 What can you take a conscious break from today? #efficiency #empathy #work #conscious #spiritualpractice #health #wellbeing #leadership #selfobservation #autoethnography

Enhance Your Workday with Mindfulness: 7 Effective Strategies In today's fast-paced work environment, integrating mindfulness can significantly enhance productivity, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being. As presented in the attached HBR article, here's a quick synopsis of the seven practical ways to weave mindfulness into your workday: Start Your Day with Intention: Begin each day with a few minutes of focused breathing or meditation. Set a clear intention for your workday, aligning your tasks with your personal and professional goals. Take Mindful Breaks: Schedule short breaks throughout your day to step away from your desk, stretch, or take a walk. Use these moments to reset and recharge, bringing a fresh perspective to your tasks. Practice Deep Listening: In meetings and conversations, focus fully on the speaker. Avoid distractions and truly engage with their words, fostering deeper connections and more effective communication. Single-Task: Multitasking can lead to errors and increased stress. Prioritize your tasks and tackle them one at a time with full attention, ensuring higher quality and efficiency in your work. Mindful Eating: Take time to savor your meals without distractions. Pay attention to the taste, texture, and aroma of your food, promoting better digestion and a more enjoyable eating experience. Use Technology Wisely: Set boundaries for your use of digital devices. Turn off non-essential notifications and designate specific times for checking emails and messages to maintain focus on important tasks. End Your Day with Reflection: Conclude your workday with a brief reflection. Review what you accomplished, acknowledge your progress, and plan for the next day. This practice can help you transition smoothly from work to personal time. Integrating these mindfulness practices can transform your workday, leading to greater clarity, reduced stress, and enhanced productivity. Start small and gradually build these habits into your routine for lasting benefits. #Mindfulness #WorkplaceWellness #Productivity #StressManagement #MentalHealth #ProfessionalDevelopment Mindy McManus M.Ed., PCC, SPC Mindy's Executive Coaching, LLC 7 Ways to Weave Mindfulness into Your Workday (hbr.org)

Mental Fitness Coach (Certified ++) | Empowering You To Achieve Professional and Personal Success | Master Stress Management & Career Growth | Shift Your Energy for Work-Life Balance | Focused on Holistic Wellbeing
🌟 Why Focus Isn’t What You Think It Is 🌟 Picture this: A person at their desk, deeply immersed in a project. Headphones on, they're fixated on their computer, oblivious to the office buzz and skipping coffee breaks. They're not distracted by phones or emails, completely absorbed in their work, be it a crucial report or data analysis. To many, this is the epitome of focus: intense concentration, dedication, and an ability to ignore distractions. It's the classic 'in the zone' scenario, where all attention is on efficiently completing the task at hand. But is this the complete picture of what focus really is? 🤔 While the scenario demonstrates what many perceive as focus, there’s more to it than meets the eye. 💡 Rethinking Focus: True focus isn’t just about concentration; it’s about discernment and alignment. It involves recognizing what to ignore and aligning your tasks with your deeper values and goals. 🌱 A Holistic Perspective: In my experience, I’ve learned that focus encompasses mental, emotional, and physical alignment. It’s about harmonizing all aspects of your being towards your objectives. 🔗Connection with Goals: When our activities resonate with our core values, focus naturally follows. It's less about exerting willpower and more about harnessing 'why-power'. 🎯Quality Over Quantity: True focus is measured not by how long you can stay glued to a task, but by the quality and alignment of your attention. Short, high-quality focused sessions often trump prolonged periods of low-quality engagement. 🚀Leadership & Business Implications: Understanding this multifaceted nature of focus can revolutionize leadership and business practices. It’s about fostering environments where focus is a natural byproduct of aligned goals and values. 🧘♀️Achieving Real Focus: Begin by identifying your core values. Align your goals with these values and practice mindfulness to sharpen your mental and emotional acuity. Physical well-being is integral to this process. Let’s dive deeper into this topic. How do you experience and achieve focus in your daily life and work? I invite you to share your insights below. 👇 #Focus #Mindfulness #Leadership #BusinessStrategy #HolisticWellness #MentalFitness
