Charade: Who Am I? I am not my thoughts, I am not my emotions, and I am not my body either? Who I am? The awareness that knows might be the answer that Jon Kabat Zinn, -the eminent Mindfulness teacher, trainer and writer - would give to this charade. When seated in Meditation, the one that knows that we are thinking about something else than the point of attention is the awareness. Bestselling author, life coach, and sociologist Martha Beck calls it the Essential Self, this third party that sits behind our emotions and thoughts and is able to witness the battle between different threads of our beings. In situations when we feel tormented and are trying our best to make the right decision, she advises to sit in the discomfort, and let yourself be guided by the next step, which might be to do nothing at all, but to bathe in the awareness and acceptance of our conflicting thoughts and emotions. Sadness: How its Awareness Can Help us Accept Change With her book and podcast titled ‘How To Be Sad'; Helen Russell, author, podcaster and psychologist, helps us think about Sadness in a completely different way. Her book is easy to read and full of highly thought provoking notes, all very relatable as written in 2020 during lock-down. I love in particular how this title says it all: we should not run away from Sadness and as Eckhart Tolle would say : What you resist, persists'. Being amenable to sadness is a great lesson, it means that we acknowledge it, we are willing to feel the sensations of sadness, and we are not scared of it. It carries deep down the belief that if we can be comfortable with sadness, then we deeply trust that this feeling is transient and will pass. The video demonstrates that only 6 weeks of Mindfulness practice can help rewire the brain with emphasis on - reduced size in Amygdala: this is the region of the brain that notices differences, it can be overactive in anxiety prone situations, leading people to react, overreact instead of responding to life events. With 6 weeks of Mindfulness the presenter's Brain scan showed favourable changes - increased size of the Default Mode Network, situated in the posterior region of the brain, it is an area that has been highlighted over years in science experiments about Meditation. Meditators are known to get more and more control over a -by definition- wandering mind which results in activation on and off of the Default Mode Network. The Cause of All Suffering The root klesha, avidya, is a complex and ever-present concept in yoga that underlies and feeds all other kleshas. Avidya can be translated as “spiritual ignorance,” which refers to the misidentification of the self with the small self rather than the universal Self. This confusion causes existential angst and tension in the body, as one generates muscular actions to protect themselves from others. Tightness in the shoulders and restricted breathing are common physical manifestations of avidya, which can hinder the practice of backbending. To overcome this, Richard Rosen suggests relaxing into the knowledge of our interconnectedness and allowing fluctuating thoughts to calm down. With this stable mindset, one can explore themselves more clearly and let go of fear, aversion, ego, and attachment. Summer Term Children Yoga Clubs: What Am I Teaching in School? I am very excited to be starting my Summer Term teaching theme in Primary schools to children ranging 6 to 10 years old in my classes (Y1s to Y5s) Our Summer term theme will help children to explore our physical and mental health. How can we take care of ourselves physically to function at our best? And what does it mean to be mentally healthy? How do we take care of ourselves when we feel well, what does self-care mean and what if we are upset? what strategies for upset arising from things within our control (such as moods and emotions) and when to talk to a grown up? We will also look at the big events in our lives such as changing house, school our friends. I am looking forward to sharing these vital questions in a reflection format with young children arising from thoughtful lesson plans when young children get to reflect based on events taking place in our Yoga stories. How Does Mindfulness Help the PSHE Curriculum in Primary Schools? Both Yoga and Mindfulness are personal disciplines that help the practitioner seek knowledge about oneself as well as being a path of personal growth. The Yoga and Mindfulness mind is an inquisitive mind, never judging but rather curious and enquiring about the various mental processes and physical sensations that are at play during practice. In time, this therapeutic framework (as in a safe practice where exploration is encouraged and feed-back is received) allows for changes to happen so that learning can be transferred to other areas of life, so called ‘off-the-mat'.
