Charade: Who Am I?  I am not my thoughts, I am not my emotions, and I am not my body either? Who I am? The awareness that knows might be the answer that Jon Kabat Zinn, -the eminent Mindfulness teacher, trainer and writer - would give to this charade. When seated in Meditation, the one that knows that we are thinking about something else than the point of attention is the awareness. Bestselling author, life coach, and sociologist Martha Beck calls it the Essential Self, this third party that sits behind our emotions and thoughts and is able to witness the battle between different threads of our beings.  In situations when we feel tormented and are trying our best to make the right decision, she advises to sit in the discomfort, and let yourself be guided by the next step, which might be to do nothing at all, but to bathe in the awareness and acceptance of our conflicting thoughts and emotions.
