As Vivekananda pointed out, it is only when we have restored our sunken millions to human dignity and worth that we can claim to be men; till then we shall have to treat ourselves as candidates to that high estate; and Vivekananda conceived education, and also religion, as the training to equip us to claim and to realize that high estate. So he always placed stress on a man-making education and a man-making religion. Every claim needs to stand the test of life and experience. Our claim to be a mature civilized people has today to face the challenge of the widespread human backwardness of our society. Human intelligence develops the power to identify and solve human problems through the training of that intelligence in purposive thinking and social feeling and social action. The product of such training is personality-energy and character-efficiency. It is this energy that is capable of mobilizing all types of physical and social energy resources and investing them in the social field and to make society grow in health and vigour. This is the energy that we have to develop in our people today, so that we cease to be passive spectators of human suffering, so that we cease to throw our hands up in despair and resignation, but become not only adequate, but more than adequate, to our mounting problems, so that these problems yield to the sure touch of our trained mind and hand. Nowadays education has become a burden on student as well as the parents because the current education system has lost its value and importance and is converting into a series of problems. Education system, which leads nowhere, has disturbed the peaceful lives of parents and students. The system of teaching with interest and making understood the subject is slowly finishing in the Present School Education system. Teachers are only teaching as a formality and are over burdening the child with homework, completing which is a new duty for the students as well as the parents. Firstly, it is over burdening on the child and secondly, it is destroying the family environment. In true with the educational philosophy of Swamiji defines education as ‘the manifestation of the perfection already in man.’ The aim of education is to manifest in our lives the perfection, which is the very nature of our inner self. This perfection is the realization of the infinite power which resides in everything and every-where-existence, consciousness and bliss . After understanding the essential nature of this perfection, we should identify it with our inner self. For achieving this, one will have to eliminate one’s ego, ignorance and all other false identification, which stand in the way. Meditation, fortified by moral purity and passion for truth, helps man to leave behind the body, the senses, the ego and all other non-self elements, which are perishable. He thus realizes his immortal divine self, which is of the nature of infinite existence, infinite knowledge and infinite bliss.

IITs, IIMs, IAS, UPSC—symbols of success created by society. The ones casting these shadows? Coaching institutes, colleges, and even the system itself. But here’s the catch: it’s not just students trapped in this cave—it’s parents too, chained by societal pressures and narrow definitions of success. The true reality lies beyond the cave—diverse opportunities, untapped potential, and individual passions. But stepping out of the cave requires courage. 🌿 A Reflection on Responsibility and Celebration 🌿 This morning, as I walked back from the lab, surrounded by the serenity of the campus, I was struck by a disheartening sight. The rotary and the roads nearby were littered—an unfortunate aftermath of celebrations. Convocation is a moment of immense pride and joy for all of us. It signifies years of hard work culminating in a well-earned degree. But shouldn’t this degree also remind us of our responsibilities? Shouldn’t it make us more conscious of the world around us? True celebration uplifts; it does not tarnish the environment or the beauty of the spaces we cherish. This issue is not confined to one campus or one event—littering has become an almost universal accompaniment to celebrations. It prompts a deeper question: Are we truly embodying the education we claim to have gained? Swami Vivekananda, who walked these very grounds, defined education as “the manifestation of the perfection already in man.” By that standard, can we call ourselves educated if we fail to uphold basic civic responsibility? The Impact of Thin-Skinned Culture on Students, Teachers, and School Environment. In an era where the ability to engage in meaningful debate and discussion is more crucial than ever, the rise of thin-skinned attitudes among students and educators alike poses significant challenges. As a Political Science and Legal Studies educator, I've observed how this sensitivity stifles open dialogue, hampers intellectual growth, and weakens the very foundation of a thriving school culture. The great Indian philosopher Swami Vivekananda once said, "Arise, awake, and stop not until the goal is reached." However, when individuals shy away from constructive criticism and uncomfortable truths, they hinder not only their own development but also the collective progress of the entire educational community. Similarly, John Stuart Mill, a renowned British philosopher, argued that "He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that." A school environment should encourage exposure to diverse perspectives and foster resilience, rather than allowing the fear of offending to dominate discourse. As educators, it is our duty to guide students towards becoming resilient, well-rounded individuals who can engage with differing opinions respectfully and thoughtfully. Thin-skinned attitudes are not just a personal limitation—they can erode the very fabric of educational institutions, making them less dynamic and less prepared to face the challenges of the wider world. "What is Education?" by Jiddu Krishnamurti Last month, I completed a book What is Education? (Shiksha Kya Hai?) by the renowned philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti. This book is not just about education in the traditional sense—it is an invitation to deeply reflect on the meaning of learning, knowledge, and the purpose of education in our lives. While reading, I found myself questioning and comparing my own thoughts about education with Krishnamurti's profound philosophical insights. One idea that resonated deeply with me is his emphasis on education as a tool for freedom, not conformity. He argues that true education is about understanding oneself, nurturing curiosity, and breaking free from societal conditioning, rather than merely preparing for exams or securing jobs. This journey was not just about education—it was a journey into understanding fundamental aspects of life. The book made me reflect on concepts like- What is Fear | What is Jealousy | What is Anger | What is Love | What is Freedom | What is Patience | What is Creativity | What is Authority | What is Conditioning | What is Awareness | What is Relationship | What is Responsibility | What is Intelligence | What is Fearlessness. Through this process, I began to see these not just as words, but as profound questions that shape our lives. Each word became a doorway to self-reflection and exploration What is fear taught me to look at how fear limits my decisions. What is love helped me differentiate attachment from true compassion. What is freedom showed me the importance of inner liberation. For me, this book was a bridge between what I thought education was and what it could be. It taught me that education is not just about accumulating knowledge but about awakening the mind and heart to explore truth and live with integrity.
