WHY YOU NEED AN EXTERNAL LEADERSHIP COACH. “When I go to my leadership team to say I’ve got too much on my plate, they just tell me what a good job I’m doing, and pile on more tasks!…” This kind of experience is common for high performers who are so efficient at getting work done, it can be hard for others to see the real help they need. “…When I spoke with you about it, you actually, genuinely helped me grow.” When I coach leaders in organisations, one of the most common pieces of feedback I receive is how helpful it is to have an external perspective. Rather than ‘pile on my more work’, I was able to help my client uplevel their own strategic leadership to get better results for themselves and their department. Here’s what that looked like in this case: * Step back and take a big picture view * Consider all the levers in balancing performance and expectation management - the vision, strategy, systems, people, skills and culture * Sketch out a 12 month plan and a 90 day plan for your role (instead of just saying “yes” and jumping into action) * Ask your team leaders input on priorities. (“with the resources we have, we can achieve 3/10 items in the next 3 months. Which 3 are most important to you?) * Develop the mindset and resilience to let some things be “undone” while you focus on the priorities. *To protect your reputation: underpromise and overdeliver. —- As you can see, there is always going to be a difference between your boss’ response and mine. Because I’m not systemically invested in your organisation in the way that you and your team are, I can focus on what will truly, holistically help you shine. And to do that I will take a whole lot of things into account, including: * Your personal values and goals * Your journey of leadership development and the skills you need to uplevel * Your role in your company and how you can make the highest contribution to it * The pressures and needs of the people you lead and the people you report to * How you are being recognised for your contributions in your role * Your physical and psychological wellbeing * Your family, home & life circumstances Leadership coaching is a private and confidential space where you get to bring your whole self and get genuine help to grow. What does it mean to be "heart-centered" in leadership? A couple of weekends ago, I emceed at Dr Wendy Sarkissian's book signing event in Brisbane. I was moved by a short talk given by one of her guest speakers. Greg Vann, a leader in planning and city building, spoke openly about leading with heart. It struck me as at once natural and courageous. As a coach and facilitator, I am highly empathetic. I would even say it's my genius zone. However, as a founder, I often forget about this strength when I'm promoting my work. I get in my head. I get caught up in subtle unconscious patterns of trying to "prove" how great I am. Rather than relaxing into the genuine (heart-centered) connection with the people I am here to serve. When I remember to bring true heart-centeredness into my business communications, it is both humbling and rewarding. I quickly find the stress of trying to prove myself falling away, and I reconnect with authentic clarity. Leading in a heart-centered way creates space for humanness in ourselves and others. It creates powerful connections in business communications - strengthening synergy and reducing conflict in teams, deepening relationships of trust and loyalty with staff and stakeholders, inspiring excellence in service and product-development, and building more authentic connections in marketing and sales. Basically, a lot of good stuff can come from simply paying attention to your heart, and the hearts of people around you. Tears and Emotional Intelligence. There are moments when tears come to my eyes because something in me is letting go. There are moments when tears come to my eyes because I am so grateful for what I am receiving. There are moments when tears come to my eyes because I am hard up against life and it feels truly hard. There are moments when tears come to my eyes because I feel seen and appreciated and recognised and loved. There are moments when tears come to my eyes because I am witnessing someone step into their greatness and I feel so proud of them and happy for them. Tears are part of my life. My personal life, and my professional life. Sometimes my coaching clients are surprised to find themselves experiencing tears in a coaching session. I am always grateful for their tears, and for mine. (There's a whole lot of research to back me up on this. But let's stay with the feeling of it for now.) Tears are an expression of humanity. The way that I allow my tears (and others) with confidence is a small way that I express embodied leadership of emotional intelligence. I saw a headline today from eFinancialCareers that read "Ex-Goldman Sachs MD: #AI will eliminate junior coders by 2028. And it may be a good thing". I can see what they mean. My 14-year-old son is coding a video game for his year 8 project. He is receiving mentoring for his overall project strategy, learned the basics of the coding language and leaning heavily into ChatGPT to create the features and functions he wants. Though he has admittedly been stuck in some frustrating loops that he would avoid if he had more more fluency, his cute little character is already running along its obstacle course, being chased by a giant wall, losing health points, and teleporting around his game screen. 🕹 If this is Mr 14 after a few weeks of YouTube videos and ChatGPT, it makes sense that coders who are actually trained in their coding languages are now able to achieve a lot more with AI assistance. So what will junior coders be developing next? As Kwame Nyanning predicts in the article - one thing they will be developing is their leadership. Coders will have more opportunities to think about Architecture. And Architects will have more opportunities to think about Strategy. Similar patterns are likely in every industry. The good news is that, like coding, #Leadership can be learned. If my teenager at home is any indication, the future is already here and now is a good time to start thinking about how you can get ahead of the curve and embed leadership #learning in your organisation. When leaders come into a coaching session with me, I always ask them what their goal for the session is. Most often, it will fall into one of two categories: 👆 You want to increase your skilfulness in an area that you know will benefit yourself, your team or your business. This could be communication, presentations, networking, resolving conflicts, time management, prioritisation, strategic planning, developing your team... as leaders, there are so many skills worthy of investing in continuous improvement! ✌ You want to handle a particular issue that is complex or tricky. To make sense of it, look at it from a different perspective. This could be to do with your role, interpersonal dynamics with another leader peer or team member, a life transition that is impacting your focus, how your values are aligning with a current career direction, or how you are managing work-life balance. In either case, my role is to help you explore the topic in a way that is meaningful and to achieve the results that make a difference for you. And my personal goal is to produce some lightbulb moments. I LOVE lightbulb moments because they signify a shift in thinking where a problem that was difficult becomes easy. Where a skilfulness that felt out of reach, becomes your new natural. So I actively pursue these lightbulb moments in my coaching sessions. 💡 Is there something you aren't yet seeing that would make a difference here? Let's light it up. 💡 Is there a model or framework that could shed light on the topic? Let's shed some light on it. 💡 Is there an intuition, emotion or instinct you could be paying attention to, that would give you a clue about your true direction? Let's bring it to light. And so it goes. The coaching process demystified. It's not typically something you can do for yourself because it requires another person to listen, reflect, and engage. And the person needs to have enough care and interest to really understand where you are at, and enough audacity to offer a gentle push beyond your comfort zones and blind spots, so you can break through to where the real insights, realisations and solutions are. The Leadership Intelligence Experience. So I'm writing a book on leadership intelligence. It's all about how we can learn to optimise the wisdom of our mind, heart and body to enhance our leadership, decision-making and results. I call it the "triple intelligence" approach - and the method is designed so you can lead with greater confidence, clarity and compassion . I have been developing these skills in my own life and in my work with leaders for many years now. I am often told by clients that this approach is helpful, interesting, and even transformational and liberating. And the book is inspiring me to create a space to focus even more on honing this specific set of skills. Sometimes you are so busy doing what you love that you forget to stop to recognise what you have actually achieved along the way. This week I did some calculations on business metrics and honestly, I was a little bit blown away by what I discovered! Since 2019 I have served over 261 coaching clients in multiple industries and conducted over 80 days of workshop training (see my website, link in comments, for the most up-to-date list). I use the "Royal We" on my website because I recognise the assistants, partners and team members who help me do what I do. And the reality in my boutique coaching business is that I personally led every one of the sessions or workshops I counted. This is definitely a case of incremental steps adding up over time! And it also gives me a great reference point to answer that voice in my head that still sometimes asks: "Am I doing enough? Am I really making a difference?"
