Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that alters hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. This alteration causes the normally round and flexible red blood cells to become rigid and crescent-shaped (like a sickle), which can block blood flow and lead to severe pain and organ damage.
