A tale of mutual help and support! Recently, I had an enriching conversation with Sai Sreekar, where we explored the nuances of business success. From education to employment, and how SmartED is revolutionizing the journey. We also talked about technology, software, finding people to work with, and our own businesses. We both love startups, so our talk was really interesting. We shared ideas and talked about online learning and software companies. We agreed that running a business isn't just about making money right away; it's also about trusting each other, helping out, and feeling good about supporting others. We had a great chat and came up with some helpful ideas together. Surprisingly, we found out our journeys were pretty similar, which made us feel connected. Sai Sreekar's happy and passionate attitude was really inspiring. Sreekar, it was nice talking with you. Let's keep helping each other grow. PS: Congrats on your new course, Sreekar! Entrepreneurship is very difficult, but in a strange way. Entrepreneurship is easy to understand, but hard to execute. I was discussing this with a college friend of mine. We majored in Computer Science together and that was a challenging pursuit. Computer Science, software engineering, etc., has a steep learning curve in terms of understanding concepts like algorithms, operating systems, and related topics. However, once you know how to program, you pretty much got it. Entrepreneurship has an inverse characteristic. I found that learning sales, marketing, product development, networking, and related skills are easy to understand from a text book perspective, but executing them with positive results is very difficult. Even entrepreneurs who have built successful businesses in the past sometimes struggle to duplicate success. As a senior software engineer, building new software can still have challenges, but those challenges can be solved in a reasonable amount of time. And when faced with those more difficult challenges, there are resources available from those who may have already solved a similar problem that you can copy and it will probably work for you. That's not always true in business. Just because a paid ad campaign on Facebook helped grow one startup doesn't mean it will work for your startup. What I did notice that makes entrepreneurship a little easier is that the more you work at it, you will begin to develop an intuition on how to pivot as you come across new challenges. Success in business requires several different skillsets just like programming with the key difference being that you will need to get better at working with, studying, and figuring out people rather than a computer. How to get customers, should I spend $X on ads, brand building, etc., are all people-problems. I figured for me to succeed in business as someone coming from a technical background, improving my soft skills and decision-making as an individual, learning how to observe what people find valuable, learning how to network and build relationships is just as valuable if-not more so than learning the next new tech stack. In fact, the technical skills I choose to learn moving forward are solely driven by what I've observed my future users/clients/subscribers/customers/target audience find valuable. What are some additional skills you've learned recently or are next on your todo list? #startups #softwareengineering

Last year I had the amazing opportunity to co-organize a podcast for the first time! It was as fun as challenging. We had to figure out many technicalities with professional recording equipment, which I wouldn't have managed without the support of our wonderful host (and colleague) Romaike Slikker 💥 We invited entrepreneurs, educators and industry leaders to share their views on entrepreneurial competences. Today I want to share with you, one of them! We invited Jorick Houtkamp from RVO/O2Lab to talk about bridging the gap between entrepreneurial education and businesses. Jorick shared his mission to bridge the gap between Dutch higher educational institutions and businesses. O2Lab facilitates knowledge transfer and inspiration between MBOs, HBOs, Universities, and businesses, aiming to connect technology, fundamental science, and the business world. Ultimately, their mission is to make entrepreneurial education more accessible, and to ensure educational quality such that the youth of today can create positive impact in the future! "In the Netherlands, there’s a strong emphasis on technological knowledge, which is undeniably crucial. However, to effectively apply this tech knowledge to tackle societal challenges, possessing broad entrepreneurial competences is equally important." – Jorick Houtkamp. Furthermore, Romaike and Jorick explored two approaches to entrepreneurship. While one sees entrepreneurship narrowly as starting your own business, more interesting is the broader perspective which involves possessing entrepreneurial competences leading to broad value creation, such as intrapreneurship. Just like Jorick, we at the AUAS Venture Centre share the belief that everyone can learn these competences, making everyone potentially entrepreneurial. Jorick wraps up the podcast with tips on developing entrepreneurial competences: 🚀 Embrace experiential learning: Start by doing and learn from experience. 🙋♀️ Seek help and stay open to it. 🔍 Start small: Don’t fear failure and be resilient; it's part of the learning process. Nothing is perfect within the first go! At the Venture Centre, we offer programs fostering entrepreneurship in both the broad and narrow sense. Our 10K Incubator Program guides students in developing their own business, and we organize intracurricular programs across faculties to teach entrepreneurial competences. If you see opportunities to integrate our programs within your faculty or are interested in collaborating with the Venture Centre, feel free to reach out to me via email at d.redondo@hva.nl! Listen to the Podcast via the Link in the Comments! #Entrepreneurship #Education #Innovation #HvA #AUAS #experientallearning Disclaimer** This episode of the Podcast is in Dutch.
