Often in hospitality, particularly in smaller hotels and smaller companies, the roles of Director of HR and Hiring Manager are intertwined. While companies may view combining these roles as a model of efficiency, this practice is both inefficient and dangerous. Understanding the distinct functions of each role is crucial for truly optimizing efficiency and ensuring strategic workforce planning. Directors of Human Resources should be primarily focused on compliance with employment laws and regulations. Some states like Massachusetts, and cities like New York City, have complex labor regulations that are constantly evolving. As a compliance guardian, the role involves developing and enforcing policies to safeguard both the organization and the associates. If Directors of HR are responsible for long-term planning, hiring managers are focused on achieving short-term goals.
