On our recent foray into York Durham Headwaters, Bri and I decided to focus on exploring the region through the respective main streets of some prominent communities. In this case, we focused on York Region (The Regional Municipality of York), and so we circled Kleinburg (home of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and some incredible Italian cuisine), Schomberg (a cycling haven with the lovely The Schomberg Pub & Patio, one of the best patios in the province), Unionville (one of the cutest and most underrated main streets in the province), and Newmarket which in my humble opinion is about to have its moment in Ontario tourism, especially with the opening of the The Postmark Hotel. Getting to know communities through their main streets enables you to get a feel for what makes a destination tick, and the fun part is that it's always going to be different. Sometimes the cafe is the community hub, other times its the brewery, or a restaurant that's called the street home for 50 years, or perhaps even a theatre. Most importantly, at least for us and the way we travel, it's an incredible opportunity to get to know the business owners that have poured their heart into making that bakery what it is, or understanding that the meal you just tasted actually comes from a family recipe. The businesses that open in communities become part of the identity (and lifeblood) of those communities, and that's why we love to start our adventures by doing a thorough up and down of the main street, and then heading out from there. We'd certainly recommend all 4 of these main streets and, funnily enough, all for very different reasons!
