Today, on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women, we pause to #RememberThe14 women killed at L'École Polytechnique in #Montreal in 1989 and all the women who have lost their lives to violence. This day is dedicated to remembering those who have experienced gender-based violence and those who we have lost to it. We remain committed to fighting gender-based violence and recognize that women, girls, 2SLGBTQI+ and gender-diverse individuals face unacceptable violence and discrimination. We can help to address gender-based violence by listening to survivors, speaking up against harmful behaviours and pledging to learn from our past. Learn more at york.ca/InclusiveYR #InclusiveYR

Today, the 25th of November, marks day 1 of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). An annual campaign calling for global unity to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls through challenging attitudes, putting awareness into action, and revitalising commitments to preventative legislation and narratives at local, national, regional, and international levels. Every 10 minutes a woman is killed by an intimate partner or family member, with nearly one in three women experiencing violence in their lifetime (@UN Women). With the intensifying of global conflicts and disasters, women and girls are continually being exposed to higher rates of violence. GBV is preventable, therefore, I will be posting once a day for the next 16 days in an effort to raise awareness of the issue, emphasise the critical need for sustainable policy implementation, and shift the gender narrative in order to address global violence against women and girls. #NoExcuse #16daysofactivism #GBV #UNWomen #16days

As we mark the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and celebrate Human Rights Day today, we stand in solidarity with women and girls around the world and affirm: There is #NoExcuse for violence against women and girls. Did you know? • 1 in 3 women experience violence in their lifetime. • 60% of female homicides are committed by partners or family members. • In 2023, a woman was killed by a partner or family member every 10 minutes. These statistics highlight the urgency of addressing gender-based violence (GBV). On this important day, we call on governments and leaders around the world to take decisive action to end GBV by: • Ending impunity by holding perpetrators accountable. • Adopting and implementing National Action Plans to end GBV. • Funding organizations that advocate for women’s rights and provide essential services to GBV survivors. Together, we can create a world where every woman and girl is safe, empowered, and free from violence. In Malaysia, gender-based violence remains a significant and pressing issue, with research and reports consistently highlighting the alarming rates of domestic violence, sexual assault, and harassment. According to a 2020 study by the Malaysian Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development, nearly one in three women in Malaysia have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. This statistic is a sobering reminder of the widespread nature of violence against women in the country. Despite the efforts made by the Malaysian government and NGOs to address gender-based violence, barriers such as cultural stigmas, a lack of comprehensive legal protections, and underreporting continue to hinder progress. Survivors often face difficulties in accessing support services, legal assistance, and protection, while fear of retribution or shame often silences them. However, there have been notable steps towards change. Recent legislative reforms, such as the introduction of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill and efforts to strengthen the Domestic Violence Act, are steps in the right direction. These changes aim to improve legal protections for survivors, provide more effective justice, and create safer spaces for women. Yet, the fight is far from over. Public awareness, continued advocacy, and stronger enforcement of laws are essential to combatting gender-based violence in Malaysia. On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, it is crucial to reaffirm our collective commitment to breaking the cycle of violence, ensuring justice for survivors, and working towards a society where every woman is treated with dignity, respect, and equality. #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #Malaysia #GenderEquality #DomesticViolence #GenderBasedViolence #StrongerTogether #HumanRights

All survivors of gender based violence have the right to access healthcare services, including examinations, treatments, and Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) kits. Healthcare workers directly involved in the management of such cases must observe the implementation of confidential, non judgemental, and dignified health services for them.
