In honor of Women's History Month, join me in this #TakeUpSpace Tuesday series throughout the month of March. Taking up space is something we as women are typically taught and conditioned not to do. If you have a female figure in your life that lives life on her own terms, is bodacious, and speaks her mind there's no doubt it took work to get there mentally. Don't believe me? I'll never forget an exchange at a Women's CoLab event two years ago - my first - and as the Luminary event space was filling up with the fabulously fierce female attendees I said under my breath to a friend, "I just feel like I'm in the way, like I'm taking up too much space," and one of the organizers was within earshot, made direct eye contact with me and smiled, "that's the whole point". Let's talk about some of the less explicit ways you can start taking up more space in your daily habits: ✨ Using our posture to exude confidence - stand tall with your shoulders back vs rounded and slumped - physically take up more space ✨ Maintain eye contact when speaking with others - avoid looking down or away from the person you're speaking with ✨ Make yourself be heard, respectfully - speaking up and voicing your opinion during a meeting can take courage. Don't let the shakiness in your voice deter you - take a breath or sip of water and continue Remember: greatness doesn't come from comfort zones ⚡️ It may take some practice for these small behavioral changes to feel natural, but you'll be comfortable taking up space and exuding confidence in no time. Luminary's 2024 Women's History Month Summit! Today, on International Women's Day, I draw inspiration from Luminary’s 2024 Women’s History Month Summit and move forward feeling empowered, motivated and optimistic about our future. One of the event sponsors at Luminary was a high end luxury car company whose average car price is around $250,000. I chatted with their head of regional marketing in attendance and asked them "What in particular made your company sponsor this event for women entrepreneurs?" Their response was that 80% of automotive purchasing decisions are made by women, and they were certain that the room was full of potential clients for their luxury cars. I think that really speaks to how far we've come as business owners - that a luxury car company, whose 2023 revenue was 1.23 billion, recognizes our potential and sponsors our events to be in the room with us.
