Proud to be an alumnus of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Western Sydney University. The education and experiences I gained there have been instrumental in shaping my career.
Celebrating Our Progress in Engineering We’re proud to share that our Mechanical Engineering program at Western Sydney University has been ranked in the 201-300 range in the 2024 Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. This is higher than the university's overall ranking of 301-400, and it’s a great achievement that motivates us to keep striving for even more. A special congratulations to our colleagues in Automation & Control, who ranked 51-75, and in Civil Engineering, who ranked 76-100. These results highlight the strong work happening across our engineering disciplines. Let’s keep up the momentum and continue pushing Western Sydney University forward on the global stage!

I just completed GHD's Engineering Consulting on @[Forage] In the simulation I: * Completed a job simulation involving an options analysis for different rail alignment options for the GHD transport team. * Used design brief documents and preliminary designs to formulate cost and construction time estimates for different rail alignment options. * Investigated and compared the impact of each alignment option on stakeholders, the environment and design outcomes. * Compared each alignment option using a weighted options analysis spreadsheet and communicated key findings and recommendations to the client in a technical memorandum.

Congratulations to Aaron Parker and Jose Antonio Moreno who have successfully gained their CPEng status! As stated by Engineering New Zealand, registering as a Chartered Professional Engineer is the highest technical credential for engineers and the gold standard in the industry. Gaining Chartership also shows that an engineer is competent in solving complex engineering work, which signifies a high level of technical and professional skills. This is always true for our civil, water, and structural engineers at Vecta. This status sets our engineers apart from other engineers as their drive to achieve the highest level is always in their set of goals. To apply for the qualification, an engineer with a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Washington Accord accredited qualification) can apply, provided they have acquired 4-6 years of experience. Aaron and Joey had to take a different approach and undergo a Knowledge Assessment to demonstrate that their engineering knowledge is equivalent to the Washington Accord qualification. Great work boys! At Vecta, we are dedicated to providing our engineers with a clear and structured pathway to achieve Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status. We emphasise both support and accountability, ensuring our engineers are well-prepared for their CPEng journey. Our approach involves: 1. Structured Pathway: We create a detailed roadmap for engineers, outlining the steps necessary to achieve CPEng status 2. Accountability: Engineers are held accountable for their progress and goals. This helps them stay focused and motivated. 3. Support : We provide extensive support, including mentorship and guidance, to help engineers compile their work samples and complete necessary forms. 4. Experience and Knowledge: We focus on equipping our engineers with the knowledge and experience needed, particularly through complex design work. This hands-on experience is crucial for meeting the CPEng requirements and developing the skills necessary for advanced engineering roles. By combining these elements, we ensure our engineers are not only prepared to achieve CPEng status but also excel in their professional careers.

I have just seen a post from Alan Bastos Moraes here on LinkedIn and I wanted to forward with my connections as well…. He couldn’t have described better the experiences and challenges for us (Brazilian engineers & foreign) … Check it out: “Coming to Europe as a Brazilian civil engineer brings many questions and unique challenges. In Brazil, we are used to playing many roles within civil engineering. During my career in Brazil, I gained experience in: - Budgets - Projects and drawings - Legislation - Drainage - Electrical work - Surveying - Building construction - Site management This versatility prepares us to handle any challenge in our field. However, when we arrive in Europe, we find a market where specialization is the norm. Here, each part of civil engineering is clearly divided, and often we need to choose an area to focus on. This transition can be challenging both for us, Brazilian engineers, and for European recruiters and companies who might not fully understand the breadth of our experience. However, this situation also brings great advantages: 1. **Companies**: By hiring Brazilian engineers, European companies get highly qualified and versatile professionals who can contribute in various areas. 2. **Engineers**: We have the chance to specialize and go deeper into a specific area, enhancing our skills and knowledge. I am excited about the possibilities for growth and improvement here in Europe and eager to continue contributing with my broad experience and adaptability. The transition journey may be complex, but it is also full of new opportunities for learning and development.”

In April 2024 two KTU Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture researchers Lina Morkūnaitė and Paulius Vestfal conducted a secondment on the EU Horizon 2020 project eUMaP (Development of Utilities Management Platform for the case of Quarantine and Lockdown) visiting partners at Geosystems Hellas (GSH) in Athens, Greece. During the secondment, the researchers investigated changes in energy and water consumption during the lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to an open access report by Alda-Vidal, C., Smith, R., Lawson, R., & Browne, A. L. (2020), amid the COVID-19 pandemic in UK the water consumption has increased by 20% on average and the peak hours have shifted to later hours in the mornings and evenings. This change was also reflected in the research conducted on 10 residential buildings in Kaunas (Lithuania) on power consumption for hot water preparation during the conducted secondment in Athens. These insights are crucial for further energy management strategies development and risk mitigation during crisis conditions.

Happy Engineers Week! This year's theme, "Welcome to the Future," invites us to celebrate the incredible achievements of today while inspiring a diverse and promising future in engineering. At Sebago Technics, we're thrilled to honor the remarkable contributions of engineers everywhere. Join us this week as we shine a spotlight on some of our brightest minds. First up is Shawn Frank, our longest-tenured employee who joined Sebago Technics in 1985! As a consulting civil engineer with 40 years of experience, Shawn brings unparalleled expertise and passion to every project. Learn what makes his work so fulfilling and the invaluable advice he has for aspiring engineers. "The most fulfilling part of my career as a consulting civil engineer in the land development field is working with a client and our team of professionals through the design, permitting, and construction process to see new residential neighborhoods and commercial development constructed. These projects provide needed housing and jobs for the local community, while minimizing the impacts to the existing natural resources of the property." What advice would you give to aspiring civil engineers? "Civil engineering consists of many fields of specialization such as structural, geotechnical, transportation, etc. As a consulting civil engineer in the land development field, which requires giving regular presentations to local planning boards and interaction with both board members and the public, my advice would be to obtain experience speaking in front of groups. This experience can be acquired in various ways such as a Dale Carnegie course or involvement with a club in a leadership role that leads to presentations to the membership. The main point would be to simply obtain a level of comfort speaking to a group." #EngineersWeek #WelcomeToTheFuture #EngineeringSpotlight #ShapingTogether #CivilEngineer #Maine #CreativeEngineeringCollective
