However, despite legal protections and international recognition, the wetlands are facing unprecedented threats from encroachment, urbanization, and neglect. The EKW is not just a stretch of marshland; it's a lifeline for Kolkata. Serving as a natural waste treatment system, the wetlands process sewage and promote fish and vegetable farming, saving the city millions of rupees annually. Moreover, they act as a carbon sink, reduce air pollution, and contribute to flood control and climate resilience. Preserving the East Kolkata Wetlands requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders – government bodies, NGOs, businesses, and local communities. Political commitment is crucial, with a need for stronger enforcement of existing laws and regulations to prevent further encroachment and degradation. Community engagement is equally important, fostering awareness and participation in conservation efforts. Moreover, sustainable development practices must be prioritized, balancing economic growth with environmental conservation to ensure the wetlands' continued viability. The story of the East Kolkata Wetlands is a reminder of the delicate balance between development and conservation. As we strive for economic progress, let us not forget the ecological treasures that sustain us. By prioritizing the preservation of the EKW and embracing sustainable development practices, we can build a future where nature and humanity thrive in harmony. Let us act decisively today to secure a brighter tomorrow for Kolkata and beyond. #SustainableDevelopment #NatureConservation #ClimateAction #EKW #Conservation #Kolkata #Environment #CommunityEngagement Reference: https://lnkd.in/gBgrKhxx

#Mangrove Plantation Drive (The community Forest program): Reiterating it’s commitment towards the environment and empowerment of the underprivileged people, #HPL has planted over 30,000 mangroves in 2023-24 as a part of The Community Forest Program at #Sundarban in collaboration with Kolkata Society For Cultural Heritage (KSCH) . At the village of Sonagarh, Sajnekhali, Block- Gosaba, the program ran for a period of 4 and half months to complete cultivation and plantation process followed by 3 years of maintenance of the plants to yield the best result. During severe storms and #cyclones, the mangroves serve as a vital lifeline for the inhabitants of this region, protecting coastland by absorbing the energy of storm-driven waves and wind action, creating an effect of a natural breakwater. Mangroves also help to trap debris and silt, contributing to soil formation and stabilizing the coastline, control pollution etc. Over 1000 people (majorly women) from the villages of Sonagarh, Sajnekhali took part in this program and it also helped them generate income to sustain their livelihoods. We are committed to contribute more for environmental development in the days to come. #csr #hpl #mangroveplantation #sundarban #savetheenvironment #tcgfoundation #womenempowerment #poweringprogress

Presenting the Traditional Water Conservation Techniques Map of India. Did you know that Sringaverapura near Allahabad once had a sophisticated water harvesting system that used the natural slope of the land to store the floodwaters of the river Ganga? Or that King Bhoja of Bhopal built the largest artificial lake in India? Drawing upon centuries of experience, Indians have been building structures to catch, hold and store water for centuries. These traditional techniques, though less popular today, are still in use and efficient. So we decide to map them out! PS. This is not an exhaustive list, for there are so many more. If you know of one, tell us in the comments below. #WaterConservation #TraditionalTechniques #IndiaHeritage #SustainableLiving #CommunityResilience #PreservingOurPast #IndiainMaps [Water Conservation, Sustainable Living, Heritage]

In our ongoing effort to address the challenges of nurturing mangrove trees, we've started an experimental study. ⏱️ Over the course of four months, from November 2023 to March 2024, spanning five visits, we monitored an area of 1.08 hectares of healthy mangrove ecosystem (marked as natural regeneration site). And we compared it against a control area (designated as plantation site). 📍 Both areas lie within the Kumirmari Gram Panchayat, nestled within the Gosaba Block of the South 24 Parganas District in West Bengal, just 70 km away from Kolkata. 🎯 Our objective of the study? To observe whether mangrove species diversity can be restored or improved naturally through washed-in fruits or propagules brought in during tides. 👉 Stay tuned for updates in the coming days. #MangroveRestoration #RegenerateSundarbans #ConservationEfforts #EnvironmentalResearch #Soceo #India

When we envision a bright future, we often imagine ourselves in a corner office on the 18th floor, admiring a skyline view. But on reaching that 18th Floor,my skyline shows a doomed future. Presenting the eternal fire of hell right here in kolkata's Dhapa.Located on the eastern fringe of Kolkata,it has become notorious for its extensive waste dumping ground, which spans over 60 acres. This landfill has been operational for decades, accumulating more than 4,000 tonnes of waste daily from across the city. The decomposition of organic waste in this massive landfill releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas, contributing significantly to local air pollution. Moreover, the burning of waste, a common practice at the site, emits toxic fumes containing dioxins and furans—harmful pollutants that pose serious health risks to local residents. The presence of heavy metals and other contaminants in the landfill can also lead to severe water and soil pollution, further exacerbating environmental degradation in the area. This dire situation in Dhapa illustrates the urgent need for sustainable waste management practices to prevent such environmental catastrophes. #kolkata #dhapa #doomsday #pollution #antaratoday #blacksky #hellonearth

📢 Urgent Appeal: Prevent Water Wastage in Kolkata! 🌍💧 In #Kolkata millions of liters of water is wasted. It is my appeal to the Mayor of Kolkata to take immediate action to prevent the wastage and design policies to better manage this precious resource. You might be shocked to learn that an alarming 30% of filtered water by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) goes down the drains every day. This is a critical issue that demands our attention and action! As water is currently provided free to citizens, it is disheartening to see such a vital resource being exploited. There is a pressing need to incentivize technologies and practices for water conservation and recycling to mitigate this wastage. Here are some suggested measures to address the issue: Implement advanced metering infrastructure to monitor and reduce water wastage. Promote rainwater harvesting and encourage citizens to adopt this practice. Incentivize the use of water-efficient appliances and fixtures in homes and businesses. Enhance public awareness about the importance of water conservation and the impact of wastage. Develop robust policies to ensure sustainable water management and reduce wastage. It's crucial to remember that water wastage is also energy wastage, as the processes of filtration and transportation consume significant amounts of energy. By conserving water, we not only protect this precious resource but also reduce energy consumption and contribute to a more sustainable future. 👉 Sign the Petition https://lnkd.in/g5sZYsHG Let's come together and advocate for effective policies and practices that will ensure the efficient use of our water resources. Your support can make a difference! #WaterConservation #SustainableKolkata #SaveWaterSaveEnergy #EnvironmentalAwareness #GreenInitiatives #Kolkata
