It’s National Biscuit Day today - who knew? Anyone who’s worked with Lead Happy will know that we’re pretty big on biscuits, one in particular.  We asked founder, Anna Jester, what’s the deal with the Jammie Dodger thing? “When I set the business up about a decade ago, one of the first strategic priorities was to have a company biscuit. [I know, right? - ed]. For me, tea means conversation and what can I say, conversation is at the heart of everything our tribes take away with them from a LH experience.  I looked at the JD with its gooey, encased, bright red centre and how its centre is always on show, not hidden, it’s a bit cheeky, the edges are neatly scalloped to look like small people in a circle.  It’s about connection, and if ever a biscuit was designed to represent us on the coffee table, it was only ever going to be the JD.” And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how the Jammie Dodger came to be the company biscuit.  If you’ve not been to a Lead Happy event yet, you’ll see what we mean when you do! I read a book a while back that talked about the impact of winning—not just for an individual, but for an entire team. Humble Yourself This past weekend, my son invited a group of boys to stay with us to celebrate his 15th birthday. He mentioned that one child couldn’t come unless I picked him up, so of course I did. My heart broke when I arrived at his home. Shambles, despair, I don’t even know how to describe what I saw. However, this boy came out beaming, holding three large pizzas. He was so proud to contribute to the celebration. He felt bad for not bringing the fourth, but I learned there were three other little mouths he felt responsible for. With what was left of my shattered heart, I reassured him that he saved the day because we had just been talking about wanting pizza. When companies ask why their messaging isn’t resonating with employees, I remind them of situations like this. How many employees show up with everything they have, while the company focuses on something superficial? Yes, improving and growing our business is important. But remembering that your employees are human beings with their own stories is what drives your culture.
