Being in Toronto for the ACMG - American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics meeting made me think back to when I was there before. My first real conference as a graduate student was the ISMB meeting in Toronto way back in 2008. I had been to a few of the conferences at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory where I was doing my graduate work, but this was my first big conference. I was still wet behind the ears and idealistic. Of course, I thought that my research was super interesting and I thought that I would get a talk. Of course, like most people, I was relegated to a poster. ISMB is one of those massive meetings where there are thousands of posters. Even so, I thought that the results on my poster were so compelling that I would get lots of interest and someone seeing my poster would offer me a job. As everyone who has been to this type of meeting knows, there are thousands of posters and most posters presenters get little interaction. The recipe for getting interest in your poster is a bit random, but it tends to relate to location and being near a big name presenter. That was 16 years ago and I am now older (and I hope a bit wiser). I look at conferences very differently. I have developed as a scientist and a presenter. Despite the anguish of these early conferences, I think it is clearly a stage that scientists need to go through. It helps people understand the way that the field works. Shout out to my co-authors on my early poster Zhang Michael Dustin Schones and Keji Zhao What were your experiences at conferences and how have they changed overtime?
