Unplug today...

Today is the Global Day of Unplugging. It’s an annual opportunity to step away from all screens and enjoy time with friends and family, gathering in person, having meaningful conversations and experiences in nature. The time we spend on our laptops, iPhones and Netflix has turned the cave people in us to an over-technologized species that can’t sleep because of all the blue light we absorb during the day and just before we go to bed. Everything in moderation, right? We’ve gained so much ground with technology…meetings across the miles, a social network through which we can communicate and do business, entertainment on demand, connectedness with the ones we love and the speed of communication. While we take advantage of our modern conveniences all day long, I encourage you to try a single day of unplugging to see how it goes for you. Five years ago, I took a solo trip to Fiji and took advantage of the opportunity to unplug for five days. That was an incredible experience. And eye-opening! As soon as I turned my phone off, I felt the urge to get back on my phone every few minutes, much like I would imagine a smoker might feel after quitting cigarettes. After the initial impulses went away, I had a feeling of aloneness…really interesting. Next came freedom to create my day and my thoughts as I chose to do. The more you delve into yourself without distraction, the deeper you can go and quickly! I was having deep thoughts that I rarely have the time to experience, and I felt as if I was accessing a part of my brain and my soul I rarely visit. I journaled my thoughts and asked myself deeper questions that I had the time to address. When I returned to the connected world, I felt a sense of calm and truly, I’ve never returned to the tethered existence that I once had. Yes, I’m on my devices a lot these days for business, but I am not afraid to turn my phone off, ignore it or take a weekend off. So, if I’m a bit slower to return a text, that’s likely where I am. Take today to experience an unplugged day and really notice what you feel and why. You may learn some new things about yourself in the process. If you it, when you plug back in, I’d love to hear what you experienced. (P.S. This was scheduled.)
