State of PTO: A physician is a human afterall
Funny but sad reality for most of the employed physicians. With growing number of physicians being employed by hospitals and bigger healthcare systems, the situation seems to be only getting worse. Why are we even considered full-time employees when the corporations can’t even provide a basic PTO. Shows how much these corporations or hospital management companies care about their physician workforce.
A Hospitalist’s work schedule:
7 on/7 off - 12hr shifts
7 x 12 = 84 hrs/2 weeks
A traditional employee schedule:
5 on/2 off = 10 on/4 off - 8 hr shifts
10 x 8 = 80 hrs/2 weeks
All the traditional and administrative staff are entitled to PTO and a Hospitalist is not. This disparity highlights a concerning trend as it raises questions about the fairness and appreciation of physicians’ contributions to the healthcare system, which seems increasingly strained.
You put in more time to support and sustain the somewhat broken healthcare system to be taken advantage of at the end of it all as physicians are the most gullible. Physicians are the backbone of this system and it’s breaking them. This situation is not just unfair but also indicative of a system that, while relying heavily on physicians, fails to adequately support them, potentially leading to burnout and dissatisfaction.
How is this fair???..
Why is this fair???..
p.s. not representative of every healthcare system or every hospital employed physician’s schedule
The best in the biz! 👏
