In our journey of self-improvement📈📈📈, we often think that reading books 📚 and watching videos 📺is enough to master a skill. But is it really?🤔🤔 Here's a story that shows how important practice is in learning anything new. Meet Rohan, a curious person who loves to learn new things. One day, Rohan decided he wanted to learn swimming. He bought a detailed book on swimming techniques, thinking he could become a good swimmer by reading and understanding the book first. Every evening, Rohan would sit in his chair and read the book carefully. He read every chapter, understood every detail, and even memorized all the tips and techniques. He read the book 10, even 12 times, sure that he would be able to swim well just by knowing everything in the book. But when Rohan finally went to the swimming pool, he realized the truth. Even though he knew all the strokes and breathing techniques by heart, he struggled to stay afloat. The water was challenging, and his body didn't do what he thought it would. It became clear that just knowing was not enough; he needed to practice. Rohan understood that no matter how many times he read the book, real learning happened only when he practiced in the pool. So, he started practicing every day. Slowly but surely, his time in the water turned his book knowledge into real skills. Each stroke became smoother, each breath more coordinated, and his confidence grew with every swim. Through this experience, Rohan learned an important lesson: practice is the key to mastering any skill. It's the consistent effort and application of what we learn that helps us achieve our goals. Rohan's story is a reminder for all of us. While books and theories are helpful, it's the hands-on practice that makes us truly skilled. As the owner of Swimtastic Academy, one of the most frequent questions I receive from parents is, “How many sessions will it take for my child to learn to swim?” While I wish I could give a one-size-fits-all answer, the reality is that each child is unique and their learning journey varies. Here are some key factors that influence the number of sessions: 1. Age and Previous Experience: Younger children or those who have had little exposure to water might take longer compared to older children or those who have been in the water regularly. 2. Comfort Level: Some children feel at ease in water right away, while others need time to overcome their fear. A child’s comfort and confidence in the water greatly impact their learning pace. 3. Frequency of Lessons: Regular practice is crucial. Children who attend lessons more frequently often progress faster because they retain and build upon their skills more effectively. 4. Individual Learning Styles: Just like in school, every child has a different learning style. Some may grasp swimming techniques quickly, while others need more repetition and encouragement. 5. When was the last time you learnt something new? When was the last time you felt deeply uncomfortable? Or incompetent? Or were frustrated with yourself? Well, that was me every time I got near water. I can’t swim. I had school-mandated swimming lessons in Year 7, but it just never clicked. I couldn’t tread water, let alone float. Seeing my classmates get their “Dolphin” certificates while I couldn’t even qualify for the most beginner one (”Tortoise”) really hurt my ego (the requirements: float on your back, and tread water for 30 seconds). Kudos to the swim instructor who felt bad for me and gave me the certificate anyway. I’ve always felt capable of taking on anything - sports, business ideas, problems, hikes, challenges, etc. but could never quite figure out how to not drown. It has been endlessly frustrating. And so, I’ve avoided anything to do with the water for the last 20 years. (With one exception: I tried to teach myself swimming during a brief period of unemployment. I read a book, watched some videos and tried to swim laps. It didn’t work.) Until a month ago. My partner grew tired of my reluctance to go near the water and encouraged me to find a solution. I had come across Total Immersion, a style of swim instruction popularised by Tim Ferriss, a few years ago. I found an instructor (Peter Hendriks) and booked in. I was nervous about making a fool of myself. But I didn’t need to be. After my first lesson, I could float. After my second lesson, I could swim. (Note, not super well, but good enough to swim 1km in the pool). 2 hours and $260 was all it took to overcome this skill gap. If I knew it would be that quick and easy, I’d have done this 20 years ago. What are the key takeaways for me? 1) Expert instruction and one-on-one coaching can drive great ROI (cost and speed). Group swimming classes would have ended up taking 12 weeks and been more expensive (and perhaps not as effective). 2) Not all expertise is made equally. Peter is an exceptional teacher, with decades of experience teaching beginners to swim, and learnt directly from Terry Laughlin himself. There are plenty of swim instructors out there - there’s only 1 Peter Hendriks. and most importantly… 3) Don’t wait. I regret not having learnt to swim years ago. It’s unlocked an entire new world for me and finally gave me an avenue to get my zone 2 cardio in a way that I actually enjoy. What have you put off or found hard to overcome?

The first dive into the pool might be challenging, but it's the first stroke into the world of limitless possibilities. Being a trainer for many years, I've experienced firsthand the power of effective swimming instruction techniques. Today, I'm diving deep to share some insights with you. • Trust is key. An effective swimming instructor establishes trust with their students. This is crucial in creating an environment conducive to learning and growth. Trust reduces fear and allows students to take risks - it's the foundation of any great instructor-student relationship. • Always start with the basics. - Breath control is absolutely fundamental. It’s important to master breathing techniques before moving on to more complex skills. - Achieving the right body position i.e., horizontal alignment, is another key element. An optimal position reduces drag and increases efficiency in the water. - Buoyancy control, learned through sinking and floating exercises, builds an innate understanding of water dynamics. • Incremental progression is the way forward. Learning to swim is a journey. Start with the basics, and then steadily build on them to introduce more complex drills. Avoid rushing the process. Every new skill needs time to be internalized. • Feedback matters! Nothing fosters growth better than timely, constructive feedback. It reinforces students’ strengths and helps them understand areas for improvement. I strongly believe that every training session should encourage open communication and feedback. The impact we make as instructors goes beyond the pool. We're teaching resilience and discipline, two invaluable life skills. We're making the world healthier and happier, one swimmer at a time.
