A little startup inspirational talk today.... about getting your shot! I am here in Philly for the day for a talk with. Comcast, NBCUniversal, Comcast SportsTech about nVenue's vision and journey and experiences since we were part of their first cohort back in 2021. Jenna Kurath (my hero) and I had a really fun fireside chat talking tech, connecting fans to the game using 'supercompute for sports', and how sports betting is an ultimate form of engagement that is taking us all to new places! Great response from the audience and I got the opportunity to talk for hours afterwards with company folks and entrepreneurs about the topics I love the most! (If only I'd had a traveling whiteboard...) As I am wrapping up... i recognize how fitting it was that when I woke up this morning — I had a view of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, specifically the Rocky Steps. The steps are an international symbol that the underdog can rise above to become a champion through hard work, determination, persistence, and hustle. (I can hear the Rocky theme song!) But that is not all it takes to win.... you gotta get your shot! Rocky got his shot because the original fighter broke his hand.... and Apollo Creed picked the underdog Italian Stallion out of happenstance. Luck and timing. End of 2020 .... Bruce Sears, Drew W., Michael (Mik) Stearns and I did not feel especially lucky as we found ourselves with game changing AI/ML to predict live sports in the midst of a pandemic and a near shut down of live sports. Our group of talented underdogs took a shot and applied to the NBC Universal Comcast SportsTech first ever cohort. Tons of applicants. But... then the magic happened! Jenna, the execs of Comcast, and the Boomtown Innovation team listened to us... saw past our first horrible slide deck literally dripping with naivety. And they picked nVenue. They saw a spark in us, the talent, the vision... and we've never looked back. Do not get me wrong. We worked our tails off ever since then. We coded tons. Pivoted. Re-invented. Made new slides. Pitched more. Invented new ways to prove efficacy and accuracy. Listened to our clients. Built relationships with the giants - the leagues, the media, and the sportsbooks. Tested. Adjusted. So... I'd change the rocky success ingredients to this: Underdog + Talent + Hard Work + Perseverence + Hustle + Opportunity (Jenna, Comcast, NBC) = an ability to change the world. Bottom line... all of our shots come in different forms.... but when we get them, make them work for you! Be ready, train hard, work hard, keep pushing! (Play theme music) …. And remember Rocky lost that first fight. The titles took even more work! Now back to H-Town. Thank you, Philly, for a fabulous day!
