Chain stores all over the United States and Australia have experienced an increase in shoplifting, with theft significantly impacting the profitability of retailers across the globe. The blame is being pinned on the rising cost of living and soaring interest rates, in addition to the dwindling number of staff members in physical store locations. Self-checkouts, which rely heavily on the honesty of patrons, are being pinpointed as enablers of retail theft, and many of these machines are now on the way out. Self-checkout tills, which rose to popularity in the 1990s, quickly became the norm in many retail settings, much to the majority of customers' dismay. The overwhelming sentiment towards these machines was negative: they've taken human jobs, they're prone to errors, and they make shoppers work harder to complete a sale. Now, many retailers are having a change of heart over the self-checkout stations they once praised. Late last year, UK supermarket chain Boots announced that it would be replacing its self-service tills with human cashiers. A few days ago, Entrepreneur.com published an article about US discount retailer Five Below, stating that the company will soon be limiting self-checkout stations in its 20,000 stores to combat rising theft. Coles supermarkets in Australia have recently introduced 'smart gates' to prevent shoplifters from leaving stores with unscanned items in their bags, but the supermarket giant—along with its main competitor, Woolworths—have yet to admit that self-checkouts may not be the best in-store solution.
