[Recap Video] This season, the robotics program featured 17 schools from FUSD, culminating in an exhilarating District Championship at Southridge Tech MS. #DYK #ArmyJROTC has its own VEX Robotics Competition? VEX Robotics is just one of the #STEM based co-curricular activities JROTC offers. STEM helps foster education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math disciplines. Every year, JROTC Cadets from around the country come to Dallas, Texas, to test the robots they’ve created in a gauntlet of challenges hosted by VEX Robotics. VEX is a robotics program used to educate students Elementary to College through science and engineering principles in an environment that encourages creativity, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Below, Brandon chronicles the performance of the Mary Our Queen robotics program at a recent tournament. This is the result of the hard work of the kids and the dedication of all the coaches. Vex Robotics is a great way to introduce students to the practical side of STEM. As a small team they design, build, program, test, rework and compete a robot. They are guided through the process by adult mentors like Brandon and myself. Many of these students go on to participate in robotics in high school then major in STEM fields in college. Those who major in other areas still take with them problem solving, troubleshooting and collaboration skills. If you are interested in supporting youngsters in STEM you can first approach your child's school about starting a robotics team or joining the one they have. Don't have a child that wants to do robotics? We always need help for our tournaments - judges, referees, scorekeepers, etc. Or, if you have access to a fun spot that can host an event, we always appreciate new venues.

Basketball wasn't the only tournament being played this weekend. Yesterday, the Indiana Robotics State Championship was taking place in the NFL Colts's home stadium. Growing up a kid from Indiana, my dream was to play basketball for the Hoosiers. I soon realized that would have to remain a dream. However, my son may someday be able to fulfill a similar dream in a different sport, Robotics. It may not be physically demanding, but it does require commitment, perseverance, strategy, teamwork, grit, focus, and lots of practice... Kids who love building Lego, tinkering with computers, and are passionate about science now have an competitive outlet that can put them in an arena in front of thousands. Indiana has fully embraced robotics. It has the largest involvement of any state, high schoolers can letter, and now Purdue University awarded its first full scholarship for robotics during the opening ceremonies. I suspect other states will increase their involvement and scholarship opportunities will become common amongst universities. Who knows, if we had this 30 years ago my dream may have been creating the next big advancement in technology instead of going pro in a sport that is limited to those who are physically gifted. We will organize the IEEE RAS Summer School on Educational Robotics from July 8 to July 12 2024 in Graz, Austria. To spark the interest of young people in Robotics and AI is of paramount importance. Unfortunately, resources are scarce at schools which are the natural multiplier in this endeavor. Thus, the summer school aims to develop an easy-to-access robot simulation environment and ready-to-use teaching material for educational robotics in schools. Teachers, lecturers, and university students will work on this goal during a week that will offer keynotes, hands-on sessions, discussions, and a strategy workshop. Dive into topics such as technology, sustainability, accessibility, didactic concepts, and OpenRoberta and take part in material development and in shaping an easy-to-access future of educational robotics.
