Step onto the University of Guelph campus, and you can't miss our guardian Gryphon Statue, standing proud at the main entrance where Stone Road meets Gordon Street. But what makes this statue extra special isn't its size or shape—it's the gleaming Gryphon beak. Picture this: as students stroll past, they can't resist reaching out and giving the Gryphon's beak a little rub. Why? Well, it's a tradition, a secret code among Guelph folks. Rubbing the beak brings good luck, especially when a new semester kicks off or those dreaded exams loom large. It's a scene you'll see time and again—a student on the way to class pausing for a moment, fingers brushing over the bronze beak, maybe whispering a silent wish for success. Some might call it superstition, but for us, it's a bit of campus magic, connecting us all in a shared hope for the future. And that's what makes our Gryphon Beak Rub so special. A recent Bloomberg piece strengthens our conviction that state schools in our region will continue to attract growing numbers of out-of-state students. This trend serves as a significant tailwind for local hotels, especially those near campuses. Don't be surprised if you see Kennesaw State University or University of Indianapolis follow the lead of Lindenwood to cut athletics opportunities in the coming years. The finances don't add up and there will be a tidal wave of expenses not realized by the leaders at these institutions. Of course they aren't. As of 2019, Delaware operated on 87% subsidy from students and the institution. Athletics is generating only 13% of its own revenue to pay its bills, and wants to move to CUSA and DI-FBS? Unwise financial decision that will lead to cuts in the near future. It costs MORE to move up a division than the new money raised. Always.
