Venture creation in deep tech isn’t just about brilliant ideas—it's about grit, resilience, teamwork, and strong partnerships. I’ve often called it a ‘labour of love’ because, at its core, it’s about navigating challenges, connecting early science with market needs, and nurturing talent to drive impact. Over the past few years, I’ve seen how A*STAR has ramped up efforts in this space, forming partnerships with industry leaders, accelerators, and startups. It's been inspiring to be a part of the journey – supporting ventures from the ground up, whether it's through R&D collaborations, product refinement, or embedding our scientists into startups through our T-Up programme. I’ve seen firsthand how this hands-on approach creates real value, both for the businesses and for the talent involved. I’m proud of how these efforts have not only strengthened Singapore’s startup ecosystem but also helped drive meaningful growth for our SMEs. I get to witness this growth in real time, and it is what keeps me going every day. 🤩 This past week at Singapore Week of Innovation and Technology (SWITCH) our annual SME Tech Day, we celebrated the growth and success of many SMEs we’ve supported. -How do you get to work? -By bike. I feel comfortable not taking the car. -Why do you work here? -I feel fulfillment in what I do. Our work aims to help industry to use resources sparingly, save energy and minimize pollutants. We improve processes and increase productivity. Another reason is certainly that I feel comfortable in the team. We have a great team in which everyone supports each other. -What was your biggest challenge so far? - Looking back, the first years of the company were particularly challenging because we had to take care of investors and funding while working on the technology and initial projects. In my opinion, this was a tough time for us all. Now, when you look at promeos®, you see different departments with defined organization and experienced staff. When I started, it was a spin-off company trying to commercialize the excellent idea of flameless burner technology, but without any references at that time. It was a big challenge to open up different markets, gain potential customers, and develop the technology at the same time. In the beginning, we had to learn how to take our first steps, just like a very small child does. After 21 years, we have transformed into a young and dynamic company and have grown up.
