October marks the end of my time with the German American Exchange e.V. (GAE). It is a bittersweet transition because - of course - on the one hand, there is an exciting new chapter beginning. On the other hand… working for the GAE has felt like an important starting point for what I would consider my legacy. Over 15 years ago, I began to pursue my goal of building a network in Bavaria in the hopes of being able to come back as soon as possible. All that came to fruition and more. But what made my life decision feel “full circle” was being able to accompany other young people - who had a similar dream - on the same journey. GAE gave me that purpose, which happened to coincide with one of its original pillars: the #transatlantic relationship. Arguably more tantamount than ever. I’m so grateful and humbled to have facilitated this overarching “make-the-world-a better-place” goal. Next to this lofty, "global" goal, I want to extend my gratitude to my partner-in-crime, Nicole McCartney. 🤝 Where she brought decisiveness to handling situations, I brought the role of communicator to help see them through. 🤝 Where I could usually bring the POV of an American college student to the table, she brought the constant of being a parent. In other words, we balanced each other out and it made the work even more fulfilling. If you’ve interacted with Nicole, you know the enthusiasm, the high degree of professionalism, and the in-depth knowledge of German employment bureaucracy she brings to the table. Thank you for hiring me, Nicole. There’s no one I would have rather worked with at this small non-profit. Thanks to all professors, host companies, and board members at GAE. I’m excited to stay in touch with everyone. Students!! 🏫 How college will look in 5 years: 📰 Each year, due to the hypercompetitive structure of our society, the new grad job market continues to become more and more competitive. 10 years ago, the networking and internship landscape for students was pale in comparison to what it is now. 👩🏫 Nowadays, it's hard to find current college students that aren't constantly networking, using LinkedIn, and mass applying to internships. Ultimately, this means that in future years, this will probably trickle down to upperclassmen in High School.
