Forsyth Barr’s latest ESG Insights report excerpt sheds light on evolving international commercial pressures and the proactive steps taken by companies to navigate the rapidly evolving sustainability frontier. I found the following points particularly interesting: 1️⃣ With international giants like Nestlé and Tesco pushing for greener supply chains, New Zealand companies are facing heightened expectations to authentically embrace sustainability. 2️⃣ The shift goes beyond mere measurement of greenhouse gas emissions; now, companies are compelled to actively reduce their carbon footprint, as demonstrated by Fonterra's ambitious emission reduction targets. 3️⃣ And, it's not just about reducing emissions; it's about fostering a low-carbon economy, as evidenced by Nestlé's willingness to pay more for sustainably sourced milk. 4️⃣ This year most NZ-listed companies are proactively disclosing climate-related information, setting the stage for a more transparent and accountable business environment. This will have a ripple effect on the reporting requirements of companies in their supply chain. 5️⃣ As climate reporting becomes standard, attention is expanding to encompass nature-based risks and modern slavery, indicating a broader commitment to responsible business practices. I see 2024 as a pivotal moment for NZ businesses, as we adapt at pace to meet the demands of a changing world. #Sustainability #CorporateResponsibility #ClimateAction #BusinessInnovation #NZBusiness #FutureofWork

I have an ASK! Does anyone can share with me on carbon footprints and how to calculate ESG/ carbon emission? As you guys know, I'm running piggyback Singapore, a strong advocate of food sustainability however I was shared with different ways of ESG calculation and wonder if there's any standardization across and what would be relevant for my industry/ or rather use case? #ESG #foodsustainability

The Sustainability Heat is on. Companies in various sectors such as financial, agriculture, food, and energy will need to incorporate climate-related disclosures in their sustainability reports under a phased-in scheme initiated in June. This requirement will extend to large non-listed companies starting from the 2027 financial year, positioning Singapore as the first country in Asia to mandate such disclosures from non-listed companies. #cdrreporting #esg #Sustainability (https://lnkd.in/gvahWUmQ)

As sustainability trailblazers, practitioners can help socially and environmentally aware businesses to articulate and quantify their goals, enabling clients to understand and address the sustainability issues that will contribute to their long-term success. On our hub for Creating Tomorrow’s Practice Today, James Lizars of Thrive Accountants explains why if you or your clients are part of a B2B supply chain, chances are that you are already pledged to net zero. In a short video, he takes you through some jargon that is going to be increasingly used as we go through this decade - scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 greenhouse emissions - https://lnkd.in/ei6bJzrK. Thanks Matthew Tan for sharing. I would like to add: "Sustainability demands stewardship, not just leadership. And that responsibility falls not only on governments, but even more critically, on the private sector" Fourth generation business steward and founder of OCTAVE Institute Limited Chavalit Frederick Tsao wrote about his vision on creating a Well-Being Economy. Mr. Tsao advocates for business to be in the forefront of this transformation: that it is well positioned to answer the United Nation's call to creating a new market economy and shift from the current Gross Domestic Product to Gross National Happiness. Business reform is pivotal, to bring out the nature of business ethics to create a market economy of impact towards well-being of all. This takes Sustainability to the next level - perhaps the only way out of the political stalemate we are witnessing around the world. Love to hear your thoughts. Another insightful Masterclass from The Matcha Initiative! 🌍 In our recent session, we delved deep into European sustainability regulations and their implications on Asian stakeholders. Asian companies big and small, regulators, or NGOs can’t ignore them. And at the same time, it appears clearly that without a proper IT system, it will be very difficult to meet the requirements! Our presenters Prakash Natarajan and Bhavani Prakash co-founders of #sustainableGaia showed extensive experience in sustainability strategy and compliance reporting, emphasizing the evolving regulatory landscape and the importance of systemic risk management. Key Takeaways: 🔹 EU’s Commitment to Climate Action: The EU’s legally binding target to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and the ambitious European Green Deal aims to reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030. 🔹 Understanding EU Regulations: A comprehensive overview of the EU taxonomy, SFDR, and CSRD was provided. These regulations aim to standardize sustainability reporting, prevent greenwashing, and ensure transparency in ESG investments. 🔹 Implications for Asian Stakeholders: • Asian Regulators: Will ultimately align local regulations with EU standards. • Large Companies and SMEs: Must assess their entire value chain for ESG impacts, risks, and opportunities. • NGOs and Sustainability Professionals: Increased workload and opportunities to engage with communities and companies. • Financial Institutions: Greater scrutiny and need for transparency in sustainability-related investments following EU taxonomy. Additional Insights: 🔹 Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDD): Companies must identify, discuss, and address potential and actual adverse human rights and environmental impacts, including their entire value chain. This directive emphasizes contractual cascading of due diligence and holds companies accountable for their business partners’ compliance. 🔹 Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM): Designed to prevent carbon leakage, CBAM requires importers to apply for certificates covering the carbon emissions associated with their products. 🔹 Deforestation-Free Products Regulation: Ensures that products imported into the EU, such as cocoa, coffee, and palm oil, do not contribute to deforestation. 🔹 Digital Product Passport: Aims to prove the embedded carbon or circularity in products, enhancing transparency and comparability. Participants discussed the impact of EU regulations on various Asian stakeholders, providing a practical understanding of the regulatory landscape and its far-reaching effects. As sustainability professionals, we must stay informed and proactive in adapting to these regulatory changes and must take strong organisational and system decisions for that. #Sustainability #ClimateAction #EURegulations #SustainableFuture #GreenEconomy #AsianStakeholders #EnvironmentalImpact #CSR #TheMatchaInitiative Anne Langourieux
