Y'all, our young nurses are just amazing! We would be remiss not to value their thoughts and ideas! Yesterday at work, I found myself in a lovely and fortuitous conversation with a few of our newest nurses. They were sharing with me their hopes, dreams, and (a few) worries about the future. The things on their mind: -Will I be able to care for my patients the best way I can, or will I just have too many patients to care for well? -Will I make enough money as a nurse to support my family? Is there enough growth opportunity? -Can I be a nurse leader and not be hated? -How can nurses meaningfully engage with executive leadership teams so that we can team up to accomplish greater things together? I found it so very encouraging that their thoughts surrounded taking care of others, whether it was patients, co-workers, or their own young families. They became nurses to live transformative lives in the service of others. To these nurses, I want you to know that you are incredible. You ARE the bright future of nursing. You are ALREADY leaders. The business of healthcare and nursing education are both influencing these issues. I have been a nurse for almost 23 years, 11 of those years as first a diploma nursing graduate then as an RN- BSN graduate. I have served as a preceptor to many NP students and also teach clinical at the undergraduate level. My perspective is frontline. - Healthcare is a brutal, emotionally taxing, and at times personality altering profession. I have always been a staunch nursing advocate even as a Nurse Practitioner. We have to understand what nursing has evolved into, it is the most abusive relationship you will ever be in. The business of healthcare has lifted nursing on a pedestal on their IG stories, commercials, and other media production. Ask a nurse if they feel that from the core… do they feel supported, heard or protected, most would say no. Yes there are unit managers out there turning themselves inside out to make a difference, but the non clinical administration push back on everything. Never mind the abuse nurses are being subjected to daily, physical emotional from patients and their families… No wonder every nurse wants to run away. Nurses including advanced practice nurses need a seat at the highest levels of the business of healthcare. - The nursing education system is just another part of these complex problems. It is a problem as a profession that can be fixed by US. Graduate advanced practice degrees in nursing should have strict standards. If you are advancing your nursing career to an advanced practice level, you should have mastered that most basic level. You should have to have completed a standardized amount of time as a nurse. This is where we are going to debate… and that’s appropriate - that’s what we should do as a profession. You should have to have experience in certain specialty advanced practice degrees, such as behavioral health, or pediatrics. PUT THE NURSE BACK INTO NURSE PRACTITIONER. - One more point on our education, educators please please please stop telling undergraduate nursing students that they should return to school to be a NP! They will never learn to respect the job that is so important for the advancement of healthcare. The healthcare industry stands on the shoulders of nursing, they should be proud, understand and know that they are IMPORTANT AND NECESSARY!!! I understand that nursing programs are underfunded, we need to change that! There are so many more views that I have about this, but as a profession we hold the power to change how we educate each other and how we advocate for each other at all levels of education.

For example, I had a patient who had been on bed rest for a few weeks for risks of pre-term delivery. Since the hospital would not allow children into the unit, I took the patient to the lobby in a wheelchair to see her children. This is an example of goodwill because I did what was best for the patient, and the patient could have a healthy, full-term baby boy. She studied as a nursing student at the Kaiserwerth Deaconesses' Institute in the city of Düsseldorf. By 1860, she had used donations to establish the world’s first professional nursing school at St. Thomas' Hospital in London. Florence Nightingale emphasized the importance of various skills and qualities that are crucial in nursing, including those we now refer to as soft skills and communication skills. Although the specific terms "soft skills" and "communication skills" were not commonly used during her time, her writings and teachings highlighted the significance of these abilities. Here are a few key points from her work: 1. Empathy and Compassion : Nightingale believed that nurses should possess a deep sense of empathy and compassion for their patients. 2.Clear Communication: While she may not have used modern terminology, Nightingale understood the importance of clear communication. In coaching nurses one-on-one when I first started Assemble, I got the same question over and over: “Has anyone else you know gone through this before?” This question says everything about the necessity of human connection and community. And in a setting like nursing, which has so much in it that’s uniquely difficult and only understandable to others in the profession, it’s especially critical. Nurses need to be able to talk to someone who’s been there before and knows exactly what they’re going through. They need to talk to fellow nurses. That’s why we’re using technology to scale these human connections at Assemble - because we know how powerful community is to the well-being of nurses, and we want to amplify it tenfold to serve their needs.
