Agrifood systems generate significant benefits to society, including the food that nourishes us and jobs and livelihoods for over a billion people. However, their negative impacts due to unsustainable business-as-usual activities and practices are contributing to climate change, natural resource degradation and the unaffordability of healthy diets. The State of Food and Agriculture 2023 looks into the true cost of food for sustainable agrifood systems. The report introduces the concept of hidden environmental, health and social costs and benefits of agrifood systems and proposes an approach – true cost accounting (TCA) – to assess them. Feeding a growing population of 10 billion by 2050 while meeting a 50% increase in meat demand is a challenge, we're tackling head-on. Our business is built on simple fact. We need new ways to produce great tasting, nutritious and cost-competitive food that is better for both people and planet. With food supply chains being disrupted and production systems straining resources and contributing significantly to climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, the need for change is clear. The environmental and socio-economic benefits of alternative proteins (alt proteins), both on land and in the ocean, are compelling. According to the Good Food Institute Environmental impacts of alternative proteins | GFI, plants provide almost two-third of global protein supply on a quarter of all agricultural land. Transitioning to alt proteins could free up land equivalent to twice the size of India and China combined. Agriculture accounts for over 70% of global fresh water usage. Over 2B people are already living with inadequate water supply. Plant based meat can reduce water usage by up to 99%. Food systems account for a third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. If alt protein were 11% of the total protein market by 2035 it would reduce GHG emissions by about the equivalent of the entire aviation industry. This shift to alt proteins could also create 83 million jobs and add $700 billion in economic value by 2050. While we believe that a large-scale transition to alt proteins is essential for sustainability, we also recognise the importance of a balanced approach. Innovation in traditional agriculture, promoting practices that are less extractive, harmful to animals, and polluting, will complement the benefits of alt proteins. To achieve these goals, blended products containing both meat and alt proteins are likely to play a crucial role in achieving price parity and widespread customer acceptance.
