Ahead of the @European Parliament elections, find out more about the @European Investment Bank (EIB). The EIB was founded by the Treaty of Rome in 1958, which established the European Economic Community (EEC), the precursor to the European Union. Since its creation, the Bank's primary purpose has been to provide financing for Europe’s infrastructure projects, offering loans for projects that couldn’t be entirely funded by individual member states. As the EEC transitioned into the European Union with the Treaty of Maastricht in 1993, expanding beyond economic aspects to include broader political, social, and security dimensions, the EIB also evolved to support these policies both within and outside Europe. Did you know that: 💡 The EIB was the first of the world’s regional development banks. 💡 The initial idea was to create a European investment "fund". 💡 Since its inception, the Bank invested over €1.1 trillion in various projects.
