📚Celebrating International Literacy Day 2024🌍 Today, on International Literacy Day, we come together to recognise the transformative power of literacy in our global community. This year, the theme "Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace" highlights the vital role of language diversity in bridging cultures and fostering peaceful coexistence. In a world where over 7,000 languages are spoken, multilingual education is not just an educational approach but a pathway to inclusivity, understanding, and respect among diverse communities. When individuals learn in their mother tongues alongside other languages, they gain more than just the ability to read and write—they develop a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of human experience. Multilingual education empowers learners to connect with their heritage, engage with global knowledge, and participate meaningfully in our interconnected world. Promoting literacy in multiple languages is crucial in breaking down barriers, reducing inequalities, and building a foundation for peace. It encourages dialogue and cooperation across borders, helping dissolve prejudices and misunderstandings often arising from language barriers. By valuing and integrating linguistic diversity into education systems, we preserve cultural heritage and create an environment where mutual respect and understanding can thrive. As we celebrate this day, let's reflect on how multilingual literacy can be a tool for peace in our increasingly globalised world. Whether in classrooms, communities, or online spaces, let's advocate for educational practices that embrace linguistic diversity. By doing so, we contribute to a world where every voice is heard, every story is shared, and every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential. 🌟 How does this relate to the International Standards Organization (ISO)? 🌟 The theme of this year's International Literacy Day aligns closely with the International Standards Organization (ISO) mission. ISO standards, particularly those related to education and information, are crucial in promoting consistent, high-quality practices in multilingual education. They ensure that educational materials are accessible, culturally relevant, and adaptable to linguistic contexts. By adhering to ISO standards, we can further the literacy goal for all, fostering mutual understanding and peace across different languages and cultures. Together, we can build a more inclusive and harmonious world through literacy and standardised practices. 🌐📖 #InternationalLiteracyDay #MultilingualEducation #ISO

Another college is considering eliminating foreign-language majors because of low enrollments. Nationally, the number of students studying languages has declined nearly 30 percent over the last decade and a half. With the exception of Spanish, every program in the University of Connecticut’s literatures, cultures, and languages department is under review. Also in this week’s Latitudes: * International applications to American graduate programs in business were flat this year, a cautionary sign for programs that have come to heavily rely on enrollments from abroad. * NAFSA: Association of International Educators is asking the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to clarify that foreign students who study abroad for five months or more will remain in active visa status. * San Jose State University, in Silicon Valley, tops a new ranking of career outcomes for international students. #internationaleducation #intled #foreignlanguages #foreignlanguagestudy #internationalstudents #businessschool #careers #highereducation #highered https://lnkd.in/gRhzQfB9

Today, 21 February, is International Mother Language Day! Did you know that multilingual education enhances learning when the language of instruction is the learner’s first language? Learning in one’s first language facilitates understanding and interaction, and further develops critical thinking. It strengthens self-confidence and self-esteem and stimulates active participation. Multilingual education also contributes to opening the doors to intergenerational learning, the preservation of culture and intangible heritage, and the revitalization of languages. In addition, it enriches multilingualism on the web and is essential for digital literacy. Finally, multilingual education helps in acquiring life skills, especially in the context of emergencies, crises and natural disasters. Communication is the essence of life, and that is why this matters!
