Today, we highlight Mercadona's commitment to social responsibility and sustainability through their food donation initiatives. In the first half of 2024, Mercadona donated over 12,600 tonnes of essential products, equivalent to 210,000 shopping carts, to support vulnerable communities in Spain and Portugal. They are now collaborating with 785 social entities, significantly enhancing support for those in need. 🍽️ Mercadona actively participates in initiatives like the Great Food Collection and Spring Collection, offering innovative cash donation options at checkout to better serve beneficiaries' needs. As Laura C., Mercadona's Director of Social Action, states, "It allows food banks to purchase the products they require in the appropriate quantities and when they need them." ♻️ Environmental sustainability is also a strategic pillar of Mercadona's Social Responsibility Plan. Their Environmental Management System focuses on sustainable production, circular economy, and decarbonization. From logistics optimization to energy efficiency, Mercadona is working diligently to create a positive impact on communities and the environment. 🚗 With over 4,425 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations across 1,117 stores, Mercadona is committed to sustainable mobility. They continue to invest in renewable energy, exemplified by ongoing solar panel installations. Let's take inspiration from Mercadona's comprehensive approach to social responsibility and sustainability. Together, we can make a difference for our communities and our planet. #SmartHappy #FoodDonations #Sustainability #SocialResponsibility #Mercadona #CommunitySupport #Inspiration

Lidl GB launches independent bottle return scheme trial Lidl becomes the first supermarket to pilot its own #bottlereturnscheme across an entire city, offering customers unlimited cash rewards. The move comes after Scottish Government delayed the introduction of its Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) and will ensure that shoppers can still recycle their bottles and cans in store. With no deposit placed on the product’s retail price, customers will receive a 5p reward for each eligible item returned – which they can redeem against their shop or donate to charity. The pilot is being rolled out to all 21 of the discounter’s Glasgow stores, and is expected to recycle 10.5 tonnes of plastic and aluminium material every month. The Lidl Return Scheme is running for a trial period in participating Glasgow stores from 8th February 2024 until 11th August 2024. Richard Bourns, Chief Commercial Officer at Lidl GB: “We’re on a mission to eliminate all unnecessary waste, and with over 95% of our own-brand packaging now recyclable, reusable, or refillable we’ve been making great progress. We know that Lidl shoppers share this passion, and we hope that utilising this infrastructure, which might otherwise have been left dormant, will help to make recycling their cans and bottles even more convenient for them. With our extra incentive thrown in, and no cap on the number of items that can be recycled, it’s a win-win for all.” #collection #returnscheme #circulareconomy Photo: Lidl UK https://lnkd.in/g6aXy8qy

I thought I would share some of the great bespoke work the team has done for Woolworths Group, which looks at quantifying the economic and social impacts of Woolworths' strategic initiatives in FY23. The brief was to develop a framework that highlighted total benefits not by revenue or profit, but by value to society. Unsurprisingly, we found that diverted food waste yielded the greatest impact, with $436 million in societal benefits being derived from improved food security and connection to social services. This includes things like donating perishable goods that would have been thrown away to charities that prepare meals for disadvantaged groups. Overall, we found that Woolworths delivered over $500 million in net benefit to society in FY23. We also evaluated the societal benefit of other strategic initiatives, including the impact of avoided emissions and landfill costs and the impacts of reducing sugar and salt content in foods. An extremely interesting project to say the least and I'm looking forward to doing more analysis like this with Andrew, Raúl and Angus in the future. More detail of the analysis can be seen in the Woolworths Group 2023 Sustainability Report. 👏 CH Media Benjamin Weinmann and Mette Lykke for this long interview on Too Good To Go in CH: really interesting and inspiring 😍 ! Mette Lykke To the question: "doesn't your application simply displace the problem of waste?". You answer: "Of course, we've asked ourselves this question before and commissioned a university to analyze and answer it. The study concludes that less than 10% of the contents of Too-Good-To-Go baskets end up in the garbage can." Can we have the results of this study carried out by Too Good To Go? Like HopHopFood, many players from the social economy fighting against food waste and food insecurity would like to read it, please. To the question: "The fact is, you make a profit by selling these unsold products. You can simply donate them to charities that would distribute them to people in need." You answer: "Most of our partners only have the equivalent of two or three extra meals at the end of the day. From a purely logistical point of view, it wouldn't make sense to cross the whole of Switzerland to collect goods from 7,500 stores. Charitable organizations are therefore not an option in most cases, as the quantities involved are too small. This statement is undoubtedly true in Switzerland, but not in France, where, as you know, HopHopFood has developed a digital click&collect food aid service of free baskets reserved for people in need, making the journalist's question entirely relevant. What's your take on it? How could Too Good To Go France help HopHopFood develop its social and solidarity impact in France? 🙏 https://lnkd.in/eTT3xArb guillaume gomez Anne Rubinstein Johanna Bouheret Erwan de Gavelle, PhD Maïwenn L'Hoir Niko Muttilainen Lauranne Poulain Meleyne RABOT 🛒♻️ Laurent Bacot Jean Moreau Amélie Dumont Ilhana CHIKH 🍋 Michel Montagu Martin Riehl Chloé Cohen Géraldine Colombé Marie Mourad Dominique BRECHON 🐧 Yann Auger Anne Tison Valerie de Margerie Camille Arbib Guillaume Garot Patrick Klein Antonella Noya NTV Média Eric Fauguet

Great chat with Ronan Berry on Midlands 103 #saturdaylive program this morning. We talked about supermarket tactics like vouchers and loyalty schemes, how they get us to feel a little bit giddy, spending more money than we needed to and still feeling good about it! I shared a story about collecting for the Tullamore Lions Club annual Christmas food appeal. I was outside Dunnes, second Saturday in December and folks were being very generous with their donations and we were expressing our gratitude. Several times we heard comments like "....ah sure Dunnes Stores paid for it!!" Aldi are the only big-5 retail chain in Ireland without a loyalty scheme or voucher program, and their market share has been stagnant for several years. It's not the only factor of course, but if you're dependent on an EDLP (every day low price) strategy then your shoppers need to REALLY feel it in this highly evolved and competitive market. 💡 If you thought this was useful make sure to connect and follow #supermarketmalachy ✅ I help my clients achieve profitable growth through #strategy and #negotiationskills #training Dunnes Stores Aldi Ireland Lidl Ireland SuperValu Tesco Ireland International Private Label Consult (IPLC) The Uspire Group #fmcg #privatelabel #strategyconsulting

Managing surplus produce is crucial to reduce food waste, support those in need, and promote environmental sustainability. By redistributing excess food, organisations like FareShare ensure that fresh produce reaches people who need it, rather than ending up in landfills. This not only helps combat hunger but also minimises the environmental impact of wasted food.
🌱 At Nationwide Produce, we're proud to partner with FareShare UK in tackling food waste and supporting those in need. As highlighted in the latest article by Fresh Produce Journal, demand for FareShare’s services is at an all-time high, with even more capacity for fresh produce donations. By working together, we’re helping to ensure that surplus fresh fruit and veg gets to the people who need it most, instead of going to waste. 🌍🍏🍅 https://lnkd.in/ejRv8v8j #FreshProduce #Surplus #Charity

A recent study reveals a win-win scenario for grocery stores: donating their near-expiring food can increase profits. This counterintuitive finding suggests that such donations can reduce waste management costs and enhance the store’s brand image, potentially attracting more customers who value corporate social responsibility. 🛒🌍 The research indicates that by donating rather than discarding, stores contribute to community welfare and improve their bottom line. Instead of discounting it, stores that donated food may have made better use of the limited room to display fresher inventory. What implications could this have for the grocery industry? Could this model inspire more businesses to adopt similar practices? https://lnkd.in/gG88M7Kh #Sustainability #FoodWaste #CorporateResponsibility #GroceryRetail #FoodTrends
