This involves a range of responsibilities such as marketing and leasing properties, collecting rent, maintaining buildings and grounds, and managing tenant relations. Often times, landlords prioritize the potential cost savings of managing their properties themselves. However, opting for a DIY approach may not always be the most effective solution. Great Property Managers Were Assistant Managers First Why it's important Without assistant property managers how will companies hire property managers? Like it or not there is an organic career trajectory in multifamily management. It starts with a leasing position, then you get promoted to assistant property manager, then property manager and then regional property manager. Many of the top executives in the industry followed this path. The same goes for regionals and property managers. There are multifamily management companies that are removing the APM position. That will disrupt the organic career trajectory. I can't picture hiring a property manager that wasn't an APM beforehand. What are your thoughts?

I've noticed that property management business owners might make the mistake of hiring someone who is supposed to wear multiple hats in roles that conflict with each other. You want to hire people who are good at being 1 person. Nobody is good at being 2 or 3 different people. For example, I've heard a business owner say, "This person I'm bringing on is going to be my operator and salesperson." There are different personality types suited for each of those roles, and they don't usually overlap at all. You want to find someone who excels at one thing, not someone who will do just okay in multiple roles. If you would like to avoid making common hiring mistakes, reach out to us at DoorGrow.
