Egypt's aviation industry plays a crucial role in the country's economy, contributing significantly to both the tourism sector and international trade. Driving Efficiency and Innovation in Egyptian Airports In 2023, Egyptian airports saw a remarkable surge of 28% year-on-year (YoY) in passenger traffic, reaching nearly 47 million, as per the Ministry of Civil Aviation. This surge underscores the potential for growth within the sector. In a strategic move aimed at developing Egyptian airports, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly last January emphasized the necessity of seeking assistance from private sector companies in managing and operating airports. The Egyptian government has been working on the public offering of airport operations and management. Earlier in March, the cabinet held discussions on the proposed executive measures by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. These measures are designed to facilitate the transition of airport management and operation to private sector companies. The cabinet is currently evaluating leading consulting firms and establishing technical, financial, and timeline parameters for the upcoming bidding process. This plan aims to reflect an integrated vision for the privatization process of airport management in Egypt through a professional system to organize the flow of passengers and provide services. The government seeks a plan that attracts the best possible offers. privatizing airport management can attract foreign currency as increased efficiency and better services may attract more passengers and airlines, leading to higher revenue in foreign currencies. This will reduce time and costs, revitalize local tourism, and optimize tourism revenues. Striking a Balance As the privatization of airport management is expected to increase passenger numbers, it can affect infrastructure. With the ongoing surge in passenger volumes and airline fleets, airport infrastructure is rapidly emerging as a bottleneck to growth. In this regard, the privatization of airport management has a pivotal role to play in eliminating this barrier to growth. Therefore, regulatory oversight may be needed to ensure that the privatization does not lead to increased costs for airlines and passengers. This can be achieved by keeping state control over major companies in strategic and high-priority sectors and gradually exiting from less-priority sectors to raise efficiency levels and prompt private investments. Bangladesh Aviation in 2024: Poised for Growth and Expansion Bangladesh's aviation sector is poised for significant growth and expansion in 2024, driven by a number of key developments: * **New airport infrastructure:** The expansion of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) is expected to be completed in 2024, adding a new terminal, a third runway, and other infrastructure upgrades. Concessioning Nigeria’s Airports: A Strategic Move Towards Global Competitiveness. The Federal Government's plan to concession five international airports, including the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, signals a bold and strategic decision. Under the leadership of Festus Keyamo, SAN, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Nigeria is set to reshape its aviation landscape through private-sector partnerships. This move presents a multitude of benefits for the country, especially as the aviation industry plays a pivotal role in economic development. By bringing in private investors to manage and develop key airports, the government ensures that modern infrastructure, better management practices, and customer-oriented services become the new standard. The collaboration between Sifax Group and Changi Airports International signifies a concerted effort to leverage expertise and resources towards enhancing airport operations and services within Nigeria. Sifax Group’s strategic alliance: Elevating Nigeria’s aviation sector to new heights Founded in 1988 by Taiwo Afolabi, Sifax Group has emerged as a diversified conglomerate with interests spanning aviation, oil and gas, maritime, logistics, and hospitality sectors. Afolabi’s extensive experience and astute business acumen have played a pivotal role in steering Sifax Group’s growth trajectory, positioning it as a significant contributor to Nigeria’s aviation sector and economy.

Capacity caps are increasingly becoming an issue for airports in Europe. Amsterdam Royal Schiphol Group recently reached a compromise of sorts with its movement capacity cap reduced to 483k movements pa (from 500k.) This was an improvement on the previous proposal of 470k. Now we have Dublin Airport advising that it is likely to exceed its pax cap of 32mn & that it has been actively 'discouraging' airlines from adding new routes, with the removal of incentives. DUB's capacity cap, agreed in 2007, is related to limiting road congestion on nearby roads & is not a direct environmental cap. For a island country that has achieved huge success in operating an open economy with a focus on foreign direct investment, this seems to be an enormous own goal which will have a significant impact on the Irish economy believed to amount to €500mn and 1000 less aviation jobs. Not many economies can deal with this kind of impact. There has been the occasional bright spot with my old employer, London City Airport being allowed to increase its pax cap to 9mn pax, which based on current numbers will provide plenty of room for growth. Aviation has to show it can grow in a sustainable way as we can not ignore the impact the industry has on the climate. However, this does need to go hand in hand with an airports role in growing the economy and to allow people to take well earned holidays. Current capacity caps are too much of a blunt tool and do not recognise the nuances that exist within a heterogeneous airline customer base. One idea that could be considered, is to allow growth beyond existing caps, to be utilised by airlines using the latest generation of aircraft, which have lower emissions than older aircraft. This would provide growth but with a smaller environmental impact and would be part of the journey towards net zero by 2050. it would also incentivise airlines to invest in newer aircraft. Governments of all countries need to take a closer look at the wider picture, recognising the significant positive economic impact that airports have and balancing this better with the need to reduce the environmental impact of aviation.

Expansion of Saudi Arabia Airlines (Saudia) Saudia, the country’s flagship carrier, is also undergoing expansion and modernization. The airline plans to increase its fleet size significantly and boost its international and domestic route networks. 🇸🇦 3. Major Airport Development King Salman International Airport Expansion of Jeddah’s Abdulaziz International Airport Development of Regional Airports 🇸🇦 4. NEOM’s Aviation Hub Neom, Saudi Arabia’s futuristic city, will include an aviation hub as part of its broader infrastructure development. 🇸🇦 5. Tourism and Religious Travel As Saudi Arabia opens up to international tourism, the country aims to attract 100 million tourists annually by 2030. Religious travel for Hajj and Umrah remains a cornerstone. 🇸🇦 6. Logistics and Cargo Hub Saudi Arabia aims to become a global logistics hub by leveraging its geographic position at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. 🇸🇦 7. Private Sector Investment The Saudi government is encouraging private sector participation in the aviation sector through partnerships, JV and privatization initiatives. This includes inviting global firms to invest in the aviation and aerospace industries, particularly in aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services. 🇸🇦 8. Sustainability and Green Aviation Saudi Arabia has also committed to sustainability goals within its aviation sector. Riyadh Air and Saudia are exploring the use of more fuel-efficient aircraft and alternative fuels. 🇸🇦 9. Job Creation and Skill Devekopment The aviation expansion is expected to create thousands of jobs in Saudi Arabia, from pilots and crew members to airport staff and logistics experts. 🇸🇦 10. Regulatory Reforms and Open Skies Agreements Saudi Arabia is improving safety standards, and attract foreign carriers. The country is also pursuing Open Skies agreements to boost international connectivity and allow foreign airlines greater access to its airports.
