The Masaryčka building in #Prague incorporates 7 storeys in its eastern section with 9 storeys at its western end and is defined by circulation routes which will provide access to new civic spaces for the city. Integrating with Czech Railways’ modernisation of the historic Masaryk Railway Station that is creating a new public plaza partially over the rail tracks, Masaryčka will enhance accessibility to the railway platforms below and provide new pedestrian routes between Florenc and Hybernská on either side of the station. Bordered by the railway platforms to the south, Na Florenci street to the north, and the Wilsonova elevated freeway to the east, Masaryčka has been constructed on a derelict site that has stood abandoned for several decades. To the west, Masaryčka replaces the existing car park on Havlíčkova Boulevard with a new public square with interchanges between city’s rail, tram and bus networks; defining a welcoming gateway to the city for suburban rail passengers as well as those using the express rail link that is currently under-construction to Prague’s international airport. Located 1km east of the city centre’s Staroměstské Square, the design establishes a dialogue with the architecture and urbanism of Prague’s Old Town – known as ‘the golden city of 100 spires’. External fins within Masaryčka’s façade contribute to solar shading and transform the project’s horizontal composition to the verticality of its western façade that faces the spires of the Old Town. A cascade of terraces divides the two buildings with similar terracing on the eastern façade giving every office floor direct access to generous outdoor spaces. Communal roof gardens offer views across the city while Na Florenci street is transformed into a tree-lined avenue. Targeting LEED Platinum certification, Masaryčka’s design, procurement and construction and has prioritised local suppliers and materials with a high recycled content to meet 2025 targets for embodied & operational carbon established by the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge. What advantages do renovation projects offer over new builds? And what challenges do they bring? These are the questions our 1st panel will be discussing on September 13th at an event we are putting on as part of Oslo Urban Week. The theme for this year's Oslo Urban Week is "CRISITUNITY", and rehabilitating existing buildings definitely represents an exciting opportunity in response to the climate crisis. There are 2 main reasons why: 🌲 Sustainability: Rehabilitation projects have lower embodied carbon because existing materials like CO2 intensive concrete are often reused in the new development. 🏛 Aesthetics and cultural heritage: By preserving an existing building, perhaps with a new architectural interpretation, urban regions maintain their unique identities and keep hold of their architectural heritage. However, upgrading older buildings to meet modern performance standards is a major challenge. Take the Dronning Mauds Gate 15 project by DARK Arkitekter that we completed last year. To create the façade for this project, we had to: - find design solutions to navigate the steel reinforcements and beams that get in the building envelope’s way,  - recreate the effect of the existing building's continuous window bands and repetitive modules, while at the same time improving the performance of the building envelope, - and complete this work while the building was still occupied. We believe the results were worth it, and so do the architects. According to Silje Widing, Architect at DARK Arkitekter, "we succeeded in creating a façade with the desired functionality, which simultaneously ensured the balance between preservation and renewal in the appearance." We are delighted that Silje will be one of the panellists for our discussion. She will be joined on stage by Ellen Hole from Oslo's Cultural Heritage Management Office, and Tomas Bucas, our Sales Director for the Nordic Region. Moderating the conversation will be Geir Rognlien Elgvin, Project Director at Grape Architects. "First life, then spaces, then buildings. The other way around never works". Danish urban architect Jan Gehl. There is so much for urban designers and landscape architects to learn from the Danish capital. During the 1960’s when other cities were developing modernist plans; Copenhagen had the same intent, but didn’t have the financial resources. Instead they opened up one of its key boulevards for pedestrians. The data and change in city life spoke for itself. What followed over the following years in Copenhagen has taught us so much about the value of public spaces and how they can be developed. ‘The Danish capital demonstrates to the world that there are realistic solutions for commuting and urban public spaces in large cities, without requiring huge open areas or complex road infrastructures. To do this, it combines in a compact and dense city, a network of public spaces, sustainable mobility, and the human scale’ ‘Public space plays a fundamental role in city life. It is a space for human contact, for meetings between different cultural and social groups, and where planned and spontaneous social interactions can occur. 🚧 Under construction: Republica Amsterdam is conceived as a vertical village or “city in the city” as part of Buiksloterham’s transformation from an industrial harbour towards a vital mixed-use city district and circular economy. This spring Republica will open and be full of activities. Residents and entrepreneurs will find their way in this new vibrant microcity.   In Buiksloterham, Amsterdam North, we have revitalized an industrial area, creating a vibrant circular urban district. Republica is a micro city, where individuality and collectivity coexist, seamlessly blending urban and human scales. A public natural stone carpet has been created by putting parking and logistic facilities underground. A previously closed building block is now open to the public, activating commercial, social, and residential functions into a public realm made with expressive buildings that refer to the industrial past.   With thoughtfully arranged volumes and diverse spaces, it is a symbol of sustainable urban living. From Superlofts apartments to a rooftop bar with a pool, Republica redefines urban life.   Republica was submitted for the #zuiderkerkprijs, the most important housing prize in Amsterdam. I was born and currently live in another capital city, so I've experienced both the ups and downs of living in a bustling metropolis. Living in a city naturally intertwines your life with its development, history, and overall essence. This became evident to me during my time in Budapest. Upon moving to Denmark, the country began reshaping my mindset and perspective on life. Transitioning to this fairytale country opened a new chapter for me. Since then, I've embraced a broader approach to design, being receptive to learning and observing new facets of design. It was in Denmark where I truly grasped the significance of architectural design in shaping buildings, structures, and urban environments. Let me clarify, I don't intend to pivot my career towards architectural design. I simply wish to share the wonders one can discover by exploring with an open mind. Before settling in Copenhagen, I lived in both Aalborg and Aarhus, both of which were amazing, serene cities. However, I yearned for that 'big city buzz,' as I like to call it. Upon moving to Denmark's capital, I was pleasantly surprised by how seamlessly and thoughtfully design integrates into such a bustling urban environment. Each day, I find myself in awe as I admire the buildings, carefully planned parks, streets, and bike lanes. Danish designers and engineers have managed to craft a truly livable environment within the dynamic atmosphere of a capital city. Initially residing in Ørestad, one of the city's most international districts, I found it reminiscent of both Manhattan and Venice. Perhaps it's a bit densely populated (one of the criticisms), yet there's an abundance of open spaces. And the architectural design of those buildings is unforgettable—they leave an indelible mark and are sure to influence future structural designs. Coinciding with this exploration, I've surprisingly gained a newfound appreciation for my hometown's beauty that I hadn't fully recognized before. So, if you come across an article discussing Copenhagen's design, structure, and architecture, take a moment during your city stroll to look around, even up at times, and marvel at the beauty of this well-developed city.
