Sotheby’s auction of “The Dalmore 49 Year Old Luminary No.2, The Rare” Transforming Zaha Hadid Architects' signature architectural language into high art, ZHA’s director Melodie Leung and the 185-year-old distiller the Dalmore collaborated on “The Rare”: a 49-year-old Single Malt housed in a bespoke glass sculpture crafted by master glass blower Fiaz Elson. “The Rare” evokes the image of a full-bodied dram of whisky being decadently swirled in a rocks glass made of fine crystal, and took Elson and her team more than 2,000 hours to create. Together, Leung says, they “[brought] the material to the limit of what is possible.” The piece cured for 12 weeks at Elson’s workshop The Glass Foundry, where it then took more than 500 hours to polish, and weighs in at 176 pounds. The finished piece debuted at V&A Dundee museum and will be auctioned at Sotheby's with all proceeds from the sale to benefit the museum. https://lnkd.in/eKu8g-7q

Thank you to our friends at Antiques & The Arts Weekly for covering these two sales (see attached article below) as they are all too often overlooked in favor of those with ‘big ticket’ items. Our young team puts a lot of effort into making these auctions a success and they do so with considerable thoughtfulness and enthusiasm. I am particularly pleased with the performance of our popular Art + Design auctions. Earlier this year, and with an eye on the current market, we restructured our Fine Arts program to feature six Art + Design auctions, three each in Philadelphia and Chicago. We are also considering holding one in our Palm Beach saleroom early next year. The most recent Philadelphia offering achieved great success, as you can read in the article, as did an earlier one held for the first time in Chicago which reached a similar total. In each case, our mission is to support and promote the indigenous artists and craftspeople working in or associated with each region - and to introduce their work to a wider population of collectors both nationally and internationally. The Chicago Imagists in Chicago or the New Hope School near Philadelphia are both good examples. It is gratifying that this approach is being so well received within the arts community as well as the broader one. Prints and multiples also predominate in these auctions and we are constantly growing this side of our market and seeking suitable consignments as it is a collecting area that is currently enjoying great interest and success. “Good for you” you may say, “but how does this all benefit me?” If you are starting out as a collector, or have an interest in becoming one, particularly in the Modern & Contemporary field, these auctions provide an ideal forum for you to dip your collecting toes in the water. The price points are affordable, the work stimulating and attractive and the auction process, which has been with us for centuries, is really quite simple - and oftentimes fun and exciting! Please visit our website - www.freemansauction.com. And feel free contact me here should you have any questions. Additionally, if you are interested in art from earlier periods you may wish to visit our first online auction of American & European Art which closes on Sept 17th. Hurry, hurry - the clock is ticking… #contemporaryart #contemporarydesign #auction #art #design #prints #multiples #antiquesandthearts #philadelphia #chicago #newhopeschool #chicagoimagists #craft

Viewing Now Open | Join us this weekend at Donnington Priory to view our Fine Furniture, Sculpture, Carpets, Ceramics and Works of Art auction. From the selection of textiles in the auction, a highlight is Lot 207, a rare 17th century heraldic table carpet which comes to auction from a private collection. Although traditionally catalogued as a "carpet", this fine and rare item was intended for laying on a table as a costly and highly decorative cover, rather than on the floor. At this period textiles were rarely used as floor coverings except in the wealthiest households. The heraldic designs are less detailed and refined compared to other examples. However, unlike other examples, the heraldry is woven within the main design rather than assigned to the borders. This would suggest a specific commission possibly produced in a professional Spanish Netherlands workshop. The auction takes place on Tuesday 25 & Wednesday 26 June. The Crucifixion is a tempera painting on wood by Vincenzo Foppa, dated 1456 and preserved in the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo. The work, the artist's youthful work, is considered the oldest manifestation of Renaissance-style taste in a Lombard author. The sacred scene of the Crucifixion, set in a dark landscape, is framed by a classical arch with "ancient" columns, capitals and medallions, which recall a Paduan and Mantegna style. The background, with the winding path, the city and the castle, instead refers to a late Gothic style: this is evident, for example, in the fairy-tale arrangement of the trees on the country path or in the capricious assembly of the towers. The recent hypothesis of geographical identification is interesting: "[...] in the landscape background, behind the three crosses, on the left the castle of Sabbionara di Avio, residence of the lords of Castelbarco, on the right a turreted city which is identifiable with Trento [. ..], the mountains flank a river (Adige) in a narrow valley which symmetrically divides the landscaped banks of the beautiful altarpiece [...]". Finally, the group of three crucifixes is characterized by a three-dimensional arrangement, fundamentally correct but designed on an empirical basis, without geometric construction. The attention to light and optical refraction on various materials is a characteristic that became typical of Lombard art during the 15th century. In the painting, in fact, sudden phosphorescences light up, touching architecture and rocks: the soil at the foot of Golgotha, the mountain and the bodies painted with extraordinary pictorial freedom appear luminescent.
