🤔 What's the sustainable gap that's been troubling you? 😕 In an era where sustainable behavior is crucial, understanding the discrepancy between individuals' sustainability values and actions - the "inner-outer gap" - is vital. A new study finds that the Tripartite Structure of Sustainability (TSS) framework may be the key to solving this challenge! 🤔 Sustainability MDPI The TSS framework categorizes sustainability factors into individual, social, and self-transcendent domains, considering their activation mechanisms. The analysis revealed that self-focused factors often reinforce the gap, while self-transcendent factors consistently bridge it. Social factors' impact depends on their ethical and sustainable context. This work concludes that the TSS framework offers a promising approach to advancing education for sustainable development and provides insights into promoting a paradigm shift towards holistic, interconnected perspectives. 🌱🌍 Want to learn more? Embracing Sustainability: Educating the Next Generation 🌍 In a world where sustainability is no longer a choice but a necessity, it's imperative that we equip our young minds with the right knowledge and skills to become stewards of our planet's future. As we witness the effects of climate change and environmental degradation, it's clear that action is needed now more than ever. That's why I believe in the power of education to drive positive change. Educating our youth about sustainability not only empowers them to make informed choices but also instills a sense of responsibility towards our environment. By integrating sustainability into the curriculum from an early age, we can cultivate a generation that values conservation, innovation, and sustainable practices. But education doesn't stop in the classroom. Social organizations play a vital role in reinforcing these values and providing opportunities for hands-on learning experiences. Whether it's through community clean-up initiatives, organic farming projects, or renewable energy workshops, these organizations are instrumental in shaping future leaders committed to sustainability. I applaud the efforts of all social organizations working tirelessly towards a more sustainable future. Together, we can educate, inspire, and empower the next generation to create a world where people and planet thrive in harmony. #Sustainability #Education #FutureLeaders #SocialImpact #EnvironmentalStewardship

Sustainability encompasses three interconnected pillars: environmental, social, and economic. These pillars serve as the foundation for a resilient and equitable future for both people and the planet. 🐑 Environmental Sustainability: Environmental sustainability focuses on protecting and preserving natural resources, ecosystems, and biodiversity. It involves reducing pollution, conserving energy and water, promoting renewable resources, and mitigating climate change impacts. Key aspects include biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, pollution prevention, and climate action. 🐑 Social Sustainability: Social sustainability aims to create equitable, inclusive, and resilient communities where all individuals have access to basic needs and opportunities for growth. It involves promoting social justice and equity, ensuring access to education and healthcare, addressing poverty and inequality, and fostering community engagement and empowerment. Social sustainability recognizes the importance of social cohesion, equity, and justice for human well-being. 🐑 Economic Sustainability: Economic sustainability focuses on creating a prosperous and resilient economy that meets present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs. It emphasizes sustainable consumption and production, long-term investment and planning, fair trade and ethical business practices, and financial stability and resilience. Economic sustainability seeks to create wealth and prosperity in environmentally sound, socially inclusive, and ethically responsible ways. 🐑 In summary, sustainability requires a holistic approach that balances environmental protection, social equity, and economic prosperity. By addressing these three pillars, we can work towards a sustainable future that ensures the well-being of both current and future generations.#qbsmscbloggers

The Students’ Union at UWE has won ‘Highest Scoring Students’ Union’ award across the UK for the 8th year in the row! We are delighted to announce that this year we received a score of 98%, maintaining 'Excellent' – the highest ranking – for the 9th consecutive year. Our key achievements from 2023-2024 are: PERIODS: This year, we distributed more than 30,000 free, single-use, plastic-free menstrual products to students and staff! Additionally, 360 students and 30 staff members signed up to receive a free sustainable menstrual product (such as a menstrual cup, period pants, or reusable sanitary towel). PLACEMENT UNIFORM SWAP SHOP: A total of 595 students have swapped, donated, or borrowed uniforms for their nursing, paramedic, and other healthcare placements! We have saved our Glenside students over £7,000 on uniform costs this year. COMMUNITY CORNER: We launched our brand-new sustainability hub at Bower Ashton! So far, we have distributed over 250 items of clothing from our permanent swap shop, as well as 288 condoms, 980 cups of tea, and 500 cups of coffee. SUSTAINABLE BANKING: Over 600 students engaged with the Hell Bus during Green Fortnight, learning about greenwashing and sustainable banking. Students discovered how and why switching to a bank that invests their money sustainably can make a significant difference. CLIMATE EDUCATION MODULE: UWE Bristol has become the first university in the UK to introduce a free course on the climate crisis, following a student-led campaign supported by The Students’ Union and The Students’ Union President. Green Impact takes a holistic view of sustainability, considering it in every aspect of university life. It goes beyond 'environmental sustainability', such as reducing plastic use or cutting carbon emissions. Green Impact addresses everything from decolonising the curriculum – understanding how colonialism has shaped education – to supporting the diversity of our students through the content we teach, as well as tackling student poverty by helping students save money on food. Here at The Students’ Union at UWE, through our Excellent rating in Green Impact, we create new social norms and inspire our students and staff to engage with and understand their impact on society and the planet. https://lnkd.in/ePtE2RcK

Educating for a more just, sustainable world | Founder & CEO | Systems Thinker | Solutionary | ESD Leader | NAAEE CEE-Change Fellow 2023
What sustainability competencies do our students need to take action? So many organizations and educators working in ESD strive to engage and empower youth to take action for the SDGs and a better future. We have different approaches, tools, and community engagement techniques but share broader goals. That's one reason it's helpful to see this new report from Project Everyone that evaluated 154 educational and learning programs focused on sustainability from across the world to identify 17 sustainability competencies! Not only does the report outline what those competencies are, but it discusses the organizations and people excelling at developing different competencies so that those of us in this field can learn from each other and collaborate to go further. So many resources and organizations are mentioned here for ESD practitioners to check out! I'm also happy to say that Compass Education is featured as an organization showing what's possible to help students 'embrace complexity.' Check out the report here! https://lnkd.in/ghpzFNhz

Sustainable development refers to a holistic approach to economic, social, and environmental progress that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It involves balancing economic growth, social equity, and environmental protection to create a resilient and harmonious society. Key principles of sustainable development include: 1. **Environmental Stewardship:** Protecting and preserving natural resources, biodiversity, and ecosystems to ensure their availability for current and future generations. 2. **Social Equity:** Promoting fairness, inclusivity, and social justice to address disparities in income, education, healthcare, and other aspects of well-being within societies. 3. **Economic Prosperity:** Encouraging economic growth that is inclusive, responsible, and considers long-term impacts. This involves fostering innovation, promoting sustainable business practices, and reducing poverty. 4. **Inter-generational Responsibility:** Recognizing the interconnectedness of generations and striving to leave a positive legacy for the future by managing resources responsibly and avoiding actions that harm future well-being. 5. **Cultural Respect:** Acknowledging and respecting diverse cultural values and traditions, ensuring that development efforts consider and incorporate local perspectives. Sustainable development aims to create a world where people can lead fulfilling lives without depleting resources or causing irreparable harm to the environment. It involves collaboration among governments, businesses, communities, and individuals to address global challenges and build a more resilient and equitable future.
