Individuals with disabilities make up between twelve and twenty-five percent of the population, which makes accessible technical content crucial to the success of the products technical communicators support. At ConVEX 2024, I will be speaking about improvements in accessibility support in DITA and the DITA Open Toolkit, as well as other developments in accessibility and disability rights since I last presented on the subject ten years ago. I will also be sitting on a DITA 2.0 panel, and co-presenting about integration of iIRDS, the Intelligent Information Request and Delivery Standard, with DITA content. This week we hosted 45 of our families to talk about how we can help adults with intellectual disabilities make the move out of the family home. Of all our services, helping support them to live as independently as possible in THEIR home (not our workplace) is arguably THE most important thing we do. We introduced our new accomm lead Philip Buck who shared his extensive professional and personal experience and we heard from families, one we have been supporting for 20 years. We discussed, when is the right to get started, how to get started , the NDIS pathway and how tough it is to get an OT these days for an assessment which costs thousands and is only good for12 months. While the road to moving out of the family home seems hard, we also talked about the pre ndis scenario which was terrible and had no choice or control. The NDIS pathway today is so much better ! We shared how we are cleverly using our 5 BR air bnb short stay property to help NDIS participants and families make that transition at their pace, to build up their resilience and capacity for a move that must ultimately be navigated by all. Keeping young adults with disabilities at home too long holds them back from building their own lives. I am lucky to know what good supported accommodation looks like and how families can stay involved and I urge families like mine not to leave this ask too late until it has to be done in crisis. Imagine someone who is Deaf and has to work double or triple hard to achieve some success. What about the Deaf who have other disabilities, which is called Deaf+ (Deaf Plus)? Talking about double that double! Yes, even we people who are Deaf but with other disabilities have to work twice as hard to show the Deaf community that we can do so, but triple that with the hearing community.
