Saw a gem of a job posting looking for someone with 12 years of experience in Microsoft Azure, Docker, and Kubernetes. The pay? $56/hour, no benefits😬 Let's unpack why this is ridiculous🤔 1. Impossible Experience Requirements Microsoft Azure has only been publicly available for about 13 years, and only as "Microsoft Azure" for 10. Docker first public release was 11 years ago. Kubernetes for 9. 2. Principal-level experience, junior-level pay. Even if it were possible to meet those requirements, that many years of experience puts someone at senior or principal engineer. Anyone who takes that role is desperate for money, isn't planning on sticking around, and is just trying to avoid the much-maligned job gap. In short, this recruiter is looking for someone to lie on their resume, be on the founding team for 3 different major technologies yet leaving all of them, accept low pay without benefits, and not leave at the first opportunity that's remotely better. Is this really someone you want on your team?

The market is soft. When I see the revenue growth in organizations like AWS, Azure, Google, Snowflake, Databricks and a few others...I also hear of a massive slow down in hiring. Election year jitters? Economic uncertainty? Timing in the year? I think that starts it. But what I also feel is the greed that is more important than customers and employees. Shame on you if you laid people off for greater profit (and executive bonuses). Shame on you if you made verbal job offers and rescinded them. Shame on you if you increased prices, changed terms and laid people off (like Broadcom to the VMWare customers). I have been in and around the Bay Area over 40 years and have never seen it this bad! I am glad I retired and have to wonder how to rebuild in Maui versus what is going on in the day-to-day in technology right now. Believe in your employees, believe in your customers and the profits will come.

When I began studying for the AWS Architect Professional last year, ultimately passing in January, I thought it would help me stand out from the crowd and add a layer of credibility to my AWS knowledge. In reality, unless you're an AWS / IT Professional yourself, you really don't understand the complexity of the exam, nor the breadth and depth of the services covered. This is especially true when companies look at candidates with no experience, maybe some transferable experience, or even just hold advanced certifications. It's hard to replace hands on experience, I get it, but where does one get such experience? The common response is "build projects". However, what projects do employers want to see? They can't all be the same, right? You can Google the same project ideas that everyone else does, sure, but what stands out? How do you get a Hiring Manager's attention? Or more importantly, how do you get a resume past a non technical member of HR, who maybe doesn't understand what goes into obtaining certifications, a technical degree, personal projects, etc? At the end of the day, it's really hard to evaluate and hire candidates with limited information, especially without even speaking to them. I think this is a big hurdle a lot of candidates face today, whether making a career change, trying to advance their career, etc. Even more Sr. candidates with years of experience can experience this. #techhiring #techjobs #itjobs #cloudjobs #aws #hiring

If I was an Azure or Microsoft Cloud professional considering new job opportunities.... I'd be doubling down on; 🏅 Grabbing as many, relevant, Microsoft certifications as I possibly could - adding real value to any business interested in hiring me 📄Building a CV that cuts all the BS... clearly shows my tech skills, my personality and the IMPACT I've had in previous roles 💻 I'd get all my best scripts, IaC deployments, DevOps Pipelines and I'd be building a kick-ass GitHub / Tech Portfolio! 👍LinkedIn Recommendations - I'd be in the DM's of ex-managers, ex-colleagues, ex-girlfriends... asking for them to review my performance (OK - maybe the ex-girlfriends would be best left alone!) 💭 Create a list of 20 "Companies I'd love to work for" and I'd network the hell out of everyone that works there! If you sit back and rely on simply applying to roles... it's a tough job market! If you have a clear, actionable plan, that you consistently stick to... it becomes a lot easier🤷♂️
