The only thing that should be kept in the closet is clothes   As we celebrate 28th June is #InternationalPrideDay, we want to strengthen the essence of our culture with a promise: “At IKEA, we work so that there are no closets to come out of.”   Our vision for a better everyday life is rooted in equality. We’re happy to share that 95% of our team members feel IKEA champions diversity and inclusion. 90% feel they can be 100% themselves at IKEA. And we continue working to take these percentages even higher.   Our commitment goes beyond words. We’ve partnered with FELGTBI+ - Federación Estatal de Lesbianas, Gais, Trans, Bisexuales, Intersexuales y más and their program, Yes We Trans, developed a comprehensive LGTBIQ+ inclusion plan, and continue to educate our teams on embracing every individual’s uniqueness.   At #IKEA, we celebrate every person’s right to love, live, and work, free from closets. Let’s walk the talk on diversity and inclusion for real. I had the great pleasure to discuss important questions with the Volvo Group V-EAGLE network for LGBTQAI+ members and allies earlier this week. In a nutshell: 👉 Why should LGBTQAI+ diversity matter in the workplace? - Because everyone should feel safe to come to work as who they are, feel safe at work, respected, and be included. 👉 In 2024, do you think our society has reached full inclusion in the workplace already? - No, unfortunately, in my view more work on this is needed. 👉 What tips can you give to people to become more inclusive colleagues and leaders? - Let’s respect everyone for who they are and include them. It is as simple as that. 👉 LGBTQAI+ people who don’t feel comfortable with being “out” in the workplace, what do you want to say to them? - Sometimes I am sure this can be easier said than done. With full respect for everyone who is not ready, or who does not want to, coming out is a personal choice. But if you want to come out and feel more ready, look for other members and allies – there are many to connect with. And join the LGBTQAI+ community in your workplace, to feel supported but also to support others. I would say that this could be a good starting point. 👉 You have consistently attended the Pride parade in Gothenburg every year since 2017. What was it that made you join the first West Pride parade, and what made you come back every year? - For me as a person, and as a leader, diversity and inclusion really matter. So, when I joined the Volvo Group in 2017, it was very natural for me to also join the West Pride parade in Gothenburg. Since then, many of my colleagues in the Volvo Group Executive Board have joined me. And we can see the number of LGBTQAI+ members and allies in the Group growing every year. This week’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Transport News Brief lead comment, Driving change in the industry Making the automotive industry a more attractive place to work is a key SMMT mission and diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) – improving the sector for every one from every background – is a big part of that. DE&I is proven to improve employee satisfaction, overall business productivity and creativity, so it is important to raise awareness of and celebrate positive change that is happening. That’s why SMMT published its DE&I Toolkit for Businesses (https://lnkd.in/exRbWpuM) and hosts DE&I events each year, this month with the DE&I workshop in London (https://lnkd.in/eh95Cmta) – followed by an LGBTQ+ and Allies workshop in Birmingham (https://lnkd.in/eHSCwVtD), where Queerify will provide expert training on DE&I best practice and advocacy. The workshops are open to all in automotive, not just SMMT members or those who identify as LGBTQ+ – so everyone is encouraged to come and be a changemaker themselves. Working together is so important for DE&I to be a success, and SMMT is very pleased to be partnering with Autocar Drivers of Change (https://lnkd.in/erXmzPg4) which will celebrate the people making DE&I progress happen across the industry – from PR and marketing to manufacturing and operations, vehicle development and purchasing to sales and retail. People are now being encouraged to nominate themselves or a colleague before Friday 25 October – and there is also the Drivers of Change Business of the Year award, which cannot be entered but will be judged on entries in the individual awards. Shop scenario: A customer visits an auto repair shop and notices a 🌈 rainbow flag displayed on the wall. They comment on it, expressing their disapproval. The shop owner takes the opportunity to explain that the flag represents their commitment to creating a welcoming environment for ALL customers and employees. They focus on the business benefits of being inclusive, such as attracting a wider customer base, attracting and retaining skilled employees, without engaging in a debate about LGBTQai+ rights. Additional acts of allyship to consider: ⚫The Advocate: Ensure that the message of inclusivity is consistently communicated throughout the shop. Work to ensure that company policies explicitly prohibit discrimination and promote equality. 🔴The Amplifier: Use social media platforms to promote the shop’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
